Hi Guys,
i got some old varget powder that been in the closet for almost 5 years, what is the rule of thumb regarding the usability age limit of a powder.


we didn't get to the top of the food chain
to eat salad.

No rule of thumb....

Open it...it should have that methyl alcohol type smell...


Even if it doesn't...pour some grains out on to a white sheet of paper...if any reddish rust color appears on the powder, its time to dump it.

Five years isn't even puberty for most powders...

+1, maybe not even pre-puberty if stored properly, Red Dust = Disposal

I'm still loading from a keg of Hercules 2400 that was made in 1968 (lot 288). I have shot WWII surplus .30-06 as recently as ten years ago (still have to clean you weapon for the corrosive primers), the powder was fine.

Rule of thumb is it will be like new unless that closet was in an attic subjected to temps in the 150 degree range.

Powder stores better than tomatoes. Rule of thumb is it will still be like new unless that closet was in an attic subjected to temps in the 150+ degree range.
