Also, I think that the Campfire should award a gunwriter of the year award. To be presented at SHOT. Rick can make a big presentation but the vote has to come from the membership. Would not have to be writers on the Campfire, it could be anyone, even those long past.
Leupold does it, why cant we. This would be like a peoples choice award. We talk about them all the time anyway. Lets make it official.
What say yall?

the Campfire should award a gunwriter of the year award. Nominated and selected how? By specified criteria? By unspecified criteria? By everyone's personal criteria? By excellence, or by popularity? By amount of work published? By quality of work published? A few manufacturers have occasionally presented "Gun Writer of the Year" awards typically just once to the writers who've published the most praise of their products in the preceding year. Thus "Gun Writer of the Year" has become a banner of shame ( not an honor) in some writers' opinions. I'm glad that there's no way that I'd ever be considered "the gun writer of the year." I'll continue to do my damnedest to avoid it. .

Nominated and selected how? By the members. By specified criteria? By unspecified criteria? By everyone's personal criteria? None. By excellence, or by popularity? By amount of work published? By quality of work published? Whatever. A member nominates. Those with five nominations get put on the list. Rick sets up a poll and we vote. If manufacturers, editors or anybody else wants to have anything to do with it they have to register and participate. Results are not visible, that way the deck cannot get stacked. You can nominate as many as you want and second as many as you want. If NASCAR can pick the sexiest driver we can for sure pick a writer to honor each year. Selection is strictly at the whim of the membership and the writer can be dead or alive or no longer practicing...It doesn't matter. It shouldn't be based on anything other than member's votes.

Poor idea...kind of like making an award to a member of one's family as "The Best."

"Peoples choice award" I like the idea. I say that it be for stuff written with in the past year. It could help shape the behavior of some writers away from writing advertising copy. It might also bring more current writers to the campfire. Members are much more likely to vote for someone they "know". John

You might be over-estimating the impact of this, or any other, forum. It is a big world out there

I would find it hard to ever consider public recognition for someones work a poor idea and jealousy is a character flaw, not an emotion created by the justifiable acts of another.
As for over estimating the impact of this forum, that would have to be a judgment made by the recipient and many here would be surprised to learn about the anonymous eyeballs that visit here.
As for why? It seems very simple to me. Here at the Campfire we are lucky that several talented and experienced writers are willing to spend their time here with us when they could be writing for money, spending time with their family or hunting of all things. I think the list of candidates to be the first chosen one would be very short and deserving. If acknowledging their contribution, experience and expertise makes you uncomfortable, dont vote
Members here seem to have no restraint when it comes to voicing their opinions on certain writers or magazines they do not like. To do so without recognizing those who show great skill in their ability to educate and entertain diminishes the rectitude of this site. Yes there are other forums, there is only one Campfire. Those writers participate here because it is the best. We should set the standard and aspire to exceed it.

As my 58 year-old Uncle Tom would say, this is a "bad deal".
We all have our favorites, and some are part of the 24HCF. I have no desire to build one up and tear one down.

After pondering this for a while, I can't see anything good that will come out of doing this. I've weighed the pro's and con's too. Don

I don't see anything wrong with this concept. It's an absolute shame that we've come to the point where people believe giving an award promotes jealousy or contempt instead of promoting excellence. I, for one, would vote.

Whitetail I think its a good idea. People everywhere are jealous of something, and they will be here as well. But so what. A man that cant look at anothers work and appreciate it for what it is aint much of a man in my book.
I dont think it will create division, actually just the oppisite. No matter what you do, some will like it and some wont. So let them. Folks that want to participate can, the rest can look at a different thread. Questions though.....
Are we to look at the recent work or past ? Aagaard, O'Connor, Keith , all contributed a lot. I like some of all these fellers work. Mule Deer, Mr Howell, you, John Haviland, Wayne van Zwoll, the list goes on and on but all have contributed to the sport in one way or another. If I set down and consider all the good, I may be here a while. I refuse to focus on the not so good, we all have done things that didnt turn out like we thought it would. Just consider writing skills ? Or writing style ? Or just the meat of the article ? Or the technical expertise ? Hunting experience ? Shooting skills or the ability to help others shoot well ?
Lets look at just Campfire writers......Mule Deer is very popular here and rightly so. John knows as much or more about a lot of different things that most anyone in the business. And he is a no bs kind of feller. (BUT HE DOES HAVE A BS CARTRIDGE ) Mr Howell.....I have yet to see anyone anywhere with the command of the english language he does. An ability to say things so clearly, to the point, set you straight, and make you like it all at the same time. Wish I had a little of that. What about all his work in the past ? All the books, espically my favorite with all the cartridge prints. A lot of good work and more to come.
I think its a good idea, lets let the membership decide. Charlie

As long as I'm so overwhelmingly out-voted, may I throw-in with the crowd and suggest an appropriate crown design?
