Finally got around to messing with this carbine. Since the 308 was basically a ball powder developement, I dusted off the loading manuals and bought some 748. 125 ballistic tips, CCI ball powder mil spec primers and a new notion.... a factory crimp test.
The crimp first, improved velocity 25fps (?) Improved accuracy about 1/4 to 1/2 moa. So far so good. Inching up to book limits velocity is , well, low about 2850 fps with 125 gr Noslers.
At woods ranges this should be just dandy, but that 20" barrel seems slow. Next up will be 170 NPs for a super 30/30 or 30/40 load... 2400fps would be the goal.
Take downs are cool, anybody else a little dis-appointed with 20" 308 velocities?
Probably will keep this rig handy... with out a scope, for woods deer hunting.

Bill does that BLR have a pistol grip? The stock seems to fit me better the older BLR stock did not feel right to me esp. with a scope. KK

that seems a little slow for sure. you should be able to get real close to that speed with 150s.
Kind of wondering why you want to shoot 125s in the woods or the slow 170s fot that matter.
I like 150 and 165 grain hornady bullets for most of my .308 needs. I like the 170 grain bullet, in a 30/30.
Back to your velocity issues I would try another powder, 748 is great in all 3 of my .308s, but lots of guys like rl 15 and or vargut maybe blc2. Cool rifle you have.
Great in the brush and if you use the right bullet and get a strait shooting load , should be good as far as you can shoot it.

Slow 170s and speedy 125s just flat stop deer at iron sight ranges. Most probably will not scope the takedown, it would just spoil the one hand carry and balance. Think of it as a replacement for the TD 99 300 Savage I somehow never got to own!

Yup. Pistol Grip take down...looks funny, feels good!

Sorta like a Winchester .348, stock designed by some guy named Townsend something-or-another.
