I too love the old Rugers and their tang safety. BUT, I couldn't seem to ever handle it in the woods without bumping the safety. It should have been recessed into the tang, like Browning did with the Abolt or Savage did with the 10/110. That thing sticking up was just in the way, and it even brushed against my coat one time as I was hiking and that was it for me, I went to the newer Rugers. What a shame too, I had an old 30/06 Ruger that was a super shooter.
I know it's probably just me, but I didn't like how easy it was to hit the safety on them, but I do agree that's the right place for one to be, just not so prominently placed.
