My wife has a Canon digital camera that is about 5 years old. My son accidently knocked it off our kitchen table on to our hardwood floor. The camera did still work but the lens had some resistance whe you would zoom in or out with the lens. We just came back from vacation where the camera stopped working. My wife put her old Canon lens from her old Canon, one that uses film, and the camera seems to work fine. The lens that is broken is a Canon EFS 18-55mm with image stabilization.

So my question is can it be fixed? and would it be worth it to fix it or just invest in another lens??

Thanks
Mike

short answer: no.

long answer: you'll have to send it in to get a quote, but repairs often run $200-$500 and this lens retails for $190.

now if it was an $1,800 lens....

UtahLefty is correct.

You can pick up this lens used for $US 119 from HERE, Amazon

Don't even think about getting a repair estimate -- even the miniumum shop charge will be more than buying used identical lens.

Take $119 from the kid's college fund and be done with it! smile

as an aside for those wondering why the minimum shop charge is often more than the price of a new low-end lens: there's a lotta parts in there that have to line up laugh

three sectioned lenses, a Zeiss, a Leica, and a Tamron

@UtahLefty, why did you hack up your lenses? LOL. You sure do a lot of work to answer a post! You are 100% correct, it is cheaper to get a new one.

Sounds like s good excuse to upgrade lenses! Maybe an L? Ok maybe not, they're pricy; but a 17-85 IS would fit the bill and it's quite s bit better than the 18-55.
