This question reminds me of one my Dad always asks me about saltwater-fishing... He always asks,
How far do you have to go offshore to catch fish (in miles)
I always give the same answer - as far as i need to catch the fish.
The same goes when shooting deer. I shoot to harvest the animal i am taking, and that varies depending on hunting equipment and practice with that equipment.

Gun hunting I average about 45-50 yrds but I have trouble hitting the broadside of a barn so I limit my range. Longest shot about 75 yrds.
Archery hunting I average 22-23 yrds.

In the Southeast woods 25-100 yards Midwest and West, 150-300. Don't trust myself much over 300 yards these days.

Shortest, 20yds. Lifetime average probably about 100-125yds. I hunt NM, CO, and WY anymore and the average distance has definitely gone up. Have found a good population of mulies in NM the last 6 yrs and have been shooting 200-300 yds as it is open desert... John

I don't think I've ever taken a shot at deer over 125 yards and the average is probably closer to 80 yards which means I could have done all that hunting with an iron sighted 30-30. Of course, that didn't stop me from collecting over 3 dozen rifles chambered for the full spectrum of cartridges.
Now, coyotes are a different story as I've been hard pressed to get shots at under 200 yards while the average has been closer to 300. They spook easily in Eastern KS from being shot at all the time.

Depends on where I am hunting. NY I have never fired a shot over 100 yards. Most have been in the 50-80 yard range. In PA I have shot them from 0 yards(directly under my stand) out to 260 yards. My average shot is right around 80-90 yards.

A shot at GUS right now would be in the 10 ring no matter what distance or weapon of choice!!

most of my shots have been from 10 yds to 50 yds. Only twice have I shot more than that and those were 125 yds and 200 yds.But both of those times I was very young,in my early 20s.

This topic is great evidence that most people do not need a very high power scope, or maybe no scope at all.

Last three deer: 308 yards with a .35 Whelen 212 yards with a .270 86 yards with a .270
In the middle was an absolute buck fever choke, missed from prone on a pack at 273yards. Still crying over that one.
