I see on some pictures it has cross bolts and on others it doesn't. Is this because of different types of stocks (synthetic, wood, laminated wood etc) or different production years. I would prefer to get one with cross bolts because I hear woods stocks without cross bolts are prone to splitting with big calibers like 458 lott... which is what i am interested in. Does anyone know for sure if they come with cross bolts or not and how necessary are cross bolts? I try to do research on it, but it's hard to understand what some of the geeky writers are saying

why don't you contact CZ in Kansas City directly and ask from the horse's mouth?

Mine had them and my father's does not. A proper bedding job and pillars are one route including possibly crossbolts.

You know, kid this is the third thread you've started on this same topic. You say you want a 458 Lott which I suppose is fine yet, I don't get the impression you have even fired a 375 H&H. And BTW, the CZ is not available in SS as you have indicated you want. However, why not get yourself a used CZ in 375 and actually take a year or so and learn to handle it. Then hunt with it and see how impressive the 375 is on game animals. Then if you still feel the need or have the desire for the Lott you can simply have the barrel re-bored to 458 as the barrel contour is the same for both calibers as it comes from CZ. And while we're at it, their hammer forged barrels will shoot better than you could ever hope to generally.

See if you can actually take some real world advice this time rather than pick internet fights and you may get a lot more out of this exercise for yourself.

As far as I know all the newer wood models in 375 H&H and up come with dual cross bolts. A quick call to CZ will confirm or deny this.

But if you never shot a Lott before would recommend you try one before buying one. They kick like snot.

Either way, an older model without cross bolts can be glass bedded and have the bolts installed if you are so inclined.

They have been putting the crossbolts in everything from 375 up for a few years now. I've owned 2 458 lotts and presently have one in a beautiful piece of high grade walnut. Like was said before, you should shoot one and see if you are willing to put up with that amount of recoil. To me the lott is where the recoil becomes pretty punishing. I've owned 416 rigbys, 375's and various other big bore none of which compare to the recoil of a 500 gn bullet at 2300fps+. I have no problem shooting my 375 ruger off the ench but the lott requires alot of concentration to shoot well.

I'm not worried about recoil.. as long as it has a good pad it doesn't bother me. I shoot my .45-70 with buffalo bore loads 405 grainers at 2000fps and 300 grainers at 2350fps from a sub 8 pound rifle... and those don't bother me at all. I know its a significant step up, but i'm also a big guy I weight 300 pounds and I have a lot of muscle so recoil doesn't have much of an effect on me. If it doesn't have a good apd I will trade in for better one. I will not fire full power loads all the time, that would only be for Africa or Alaska, most of time for around where I live for black bear, moose, deer, and elk I will use either 458 win mag loads, or further reduced loads

I don't have money or time to buy 20 different guns. I'm not afraid of recoil. I shoot my .45-70 with full house loads all the time and its nothing... 458 lott wont bother me, and I won't be using lott full power loads all the time, just once ina while for fun , or while on a vacation in africa or alaska

The world does not revolve around us and animals have feelings too....just like IS ee people hunting big bears with .30-06's and .338's... because they are not man enough to shoot a real man's gun a real big bore that will humanely kill it. Would you like to be hunted and shot to death with a .22?? and Being shot at while hiking in the woods from unknown direction with a .22? And run and panic not knowing whats going on... that just ain't right. That being said... maybe some people are #2 on the food chain, but I know that I am #1 and I will always be #1 until the day I die Our intelligence is what makes us #1.. not our brute strength, which even I have but is not enough to over power a bear. It wouldn't even be that expensive. We have the techonology for space flight, and we have the technology to send satellites across the solar system to mars and jupiter, we can send a robot on mars... it's not too far fetched, especially since the moon is alot closer then mars. The apollo astronaut only took them 3 days to get to the moon. With todays technology much faster. All they need to do is line the dump trucks and equipment with ceramic or similar materials so they don't melt when leaving our atmosphere and come back... fromt he friction. The poles on the moon are ver moderate temperature and don't suffer the extreme as on other parts... you can place equipment there for long periods of time. They were planning on building a lunar outpost

it's definately there, the question is, will politics interfere

Think it could suffice for the big 5... i'm not talking about what the laws are... the law says you must use a .375 diameter bullet, but laws aside... I think it would even be better then the bigger rounds, except maybe for stopping

So i wouldn't say they don't have to put up with as much.

What makes it superior to your african rifles is that you can customize it's power you can go from low power and light weight for deer and small game, to full power and heavy weight bullets for grizzlies and african game. Plus it has the faster cycling of a lever action and you can hold any where from 6-10 cartridges, making it a perfect all around hunting gun. Go figure, something American is the best, not the first and not the last time.

Guides in alaska carry .45-70's and I think a 1,500 pound kodiak bear would eat your cape buffalo for breakfast.

Even better would be a .375 H&H.. but i've read of bears being immune to the .375. Best would be safari type rifles - .416 rigby, remington, taylor, ruger etc. or even better 458 win mag or 458 lott.

Sure a 12 gauge shotgun is better then your hands, but it's asking for trouble. remember bears can spring up to 30 mph, that means if he's 100 yards away and wants to come up on you, he'll get there in under 3 or 4 seconds, you will have time to get off 1 shot maybe 2... so you want the most power possible.

Your better off with a .30-06 or .300 win mag with 250 grain bullets, than you are with a 12 gauge shotgun

I've seen videos of people shooting bears with .375's and them not going down right away.. .and it makes sense, the .375 only shoots a 300 grain bullet, thats only a little bit larger then a .30-06. Bears don't need super fast bullets, they need moderate penetartions with big bullets that will do maximum damage for a humane kill.. don't bitch at me cause your not man enough to shoot a .416 or larger. I laugh when i hear about all these hunters going to alaska or africa with .338's or .375's... because they are afraid of recoil. It's all mental weakness, you need the courage, and fortitude and passion to practice and master a big bore. If you can't shoot a .458 lott as good as your .22, and your planning to hunt the most dangerou animal in the world... then you are stupid as hell and asking for trouble. You wouldn't change cut down a tree with a hacksaw would you? I mean you could... you could kill a bear witha .22 also. I didn't even read what Phil Shoemaker's comments, I just read the original post and commented. You can disagree with me but you don't have to get nasty.

Randy

Hi Randy/Lee,
The CZ550 is a great bit of kit, but I would reccomend taking the cross bolt out , re drilling the hole and fitting a Talley cross bolt from Brownell's. When you put the two side by side you will see why I mention this , I also bed the cross bolts with Devcon.
The CZ cross bolts you can bend them by putting them between your thumb and fore finger. The Talley bolt are K98 bolts. For the sake of a few $ its worth doing.
