I'm trying to figure out what model and serial # of my grandfathers Savage 22 lr bolt action gun is. Top of the barrel says Savage corp Utica NY patent nov 29, 1905, Sep 7, 1915,Sep 4,1917,Nov 20, 1917. Also says 22-long rifle on top of the barrel. On the very rear end of the barrel stamped around the back edge of the barrel( seen only if your sighting the gun) is the number 6354. It has a flip up safety on the right side of the gun, peep sights and knife blade style front sights. It has a steel shotgun style butplate with the Savage indian head stamped on it. Thats all I can find. It also has a short clip (probably about 7 or so rounds, says 22s,l,lr Savage Corp April 28 1908. Thats about it. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks all.

Very close. My stock doesn't have the knerling on the stock. My clip looke a little different, it has a flat knob on the bottom of it to assist in getting it in and out. Also the reciever has a knerled knob type thing on the back of the reciever so you can decock it if there is a round in the chamber or visa versa. Additionally mine has adjustable peep sights on the rear.I wonder why the model number isn't on the gun somewhere? Thanks

Stu,
A picture would be very helpful. Your description sounds like a Model 23A but it could be a Model 1922.
The M 23A wasn't model marked.

If it has a sporter stock and with that serial number it would be a Model 1922. The standard rear sight was attached at the small hole just in front of the ejection port. You might have a Savage #5 rear which would be a geat improvement to the standard. The 1922 was the sporter version of the 1919 target rifle. The 1922 was replaced by the 23A in 1924 and then the 23AA in 1933. Savage didn't stamp a model number on these so that the future collectors would have more fun trying to figure out what they had.

It looks like it's a 1919NRA version 3 (according to another post on this forum). It has the long stock with the military style strap, curved rear portion of the ejection port, the front of the ejection port is straight up and down, two screw adjustment rear peep sights, front knife blade sights, no 1919NRA markings on the barrel, and the clip says 22s,l,lr, thats all. Hows that for a run on sentence!

A 1919 with that low of a serial would have had a small ejection port. It probably has been opened up so the shooter could single load rounds many years back.
