If I had to have a smaller dog, the Boykin would be at the top of the list.

Not sure on the pictures but I do want to agree with you on the Boykins. They are the best kept secret in gun dogs. Nothing is like a Boykin. They will get closer to you than any gun dog that I have ever been around. The only problem with Boykins is the hammer that hits you when you loose one.

That hammer hit me years ago, a great girl, true hunter that spent every night in my daughter's bed. She was super on doves and ducks.

We in N.C. are grateful for Whit Boykins talents, leaving us with such great dogs. I lost my Female while she was in the process of giving birth to pups. The family has never recovered. We were planning a duck trip to Arkansas that fall where she would be the star. Never got the chance. We plan on getting another Boykin in a few years when my kids can participate in training. Then maybe we can try that Arkansas trip again.

Anyone ever gotten one to work pheasant?

I have hunted over them on dove, quail, and ducks. whiched worked out great. They also worked beautifully on tracking deer in the swamp as well. Great little dogs with HUGE hearts.

We have one in our near future as well.

How do they do on pheasants?

How well do they take cold winters?

I have hunted over a few Boykins they never seemed to know it was cold out. Pheasant they are great on as any other upland bird I have seen them work.

jlboykin & HuntingSmith:

Cool Dogs you both have there. I may PM both of you sometime for a litter reference.

Pocket Rockets are perfect for the type of bird hunting I do.

PM me anytime, I would be glad to tell you what little I know. My dog has hunted in cold weather (for here), but she was only wet for a short period of time. Temps were in the teens, but we were quail hunting and she was moving the whole time.

One thing to mention is that there is quite a bit of difference in the coats. Pay attention to the coat of the parents when selecting a breeding. My dog's hair doesn't get very long. I shave her twice a year, because it is hot here. As a breed, they usually handle heat pretty well. That said, you still have to pay attention and not let the dog overheat.

Mine is pretty small at around 26 pounds. She's only hunted pen raised pheasants, but she managed to catch two hens on the flush and bring them to me.

Saw a piece on Boykins on a dog breed show on the animal planet show. A guy has a pair that hunts box turtles. A professor in TN uses them to do his research. He'd take a bunch of students out and all day long they might find 3 or 4 turtles. This guy's pair can find as many as 2 an hour.

I miss my old Boykin. His name was Jeb. I wish I'd been a better trainer, he was a helluva dog. He'd break ice to fetch my ducks. Was very protective of the wife and child too. If he was ever allowed near water, he swam just for fun. You couldn't keep him out of the water if he could get to it.

If you're considering a Boykin, you must understand they're not Labs. They have a drive to please too, but they will also test your resolve, and they can be soft tempered at the same time they're being hard headed. In the right hands they're a VERY solid all around dog. As mentioned, they're multi purpose, and they're a lot of dog in a 30-50 pound package. They need to be around the family too. Not in a pen.
