I am requesting your ideas for a .280 Rem. LONG ACTION build for 7MM VLDs in the 168-180 grain range and 2800+ velocities (if possible). I already have completed 6.5X284 with the 140's and a .243 with the 105-107's....so I was entertaining a NON-MAGNUM caliber to shoot the Higher B.C. 168-180's to fill the "bullet weight step" that I have created in my mind...lol. Any thoughts or load data, twist rates, etc. will be considered! Thanks!

I'd suggest the 280AI.

9 twist.

At or near 3000 with 162-168gr bullets.

VERY good reports have been heard about the 162 Amax.

Another vote for the .280AI with a 9 twist and the 162 A-Max.

That 6.5 with 140s is good for a lot of stuff. I understand though as my son is currently building a 9 twist 7mm Rem mag to run the 180s.

I'm currently running a factory 9.5" twist .280 and pushing the 162AM at 2945fps. It works wink

Been doing a bit of looking at doing a 280 AI myself and ran into kind of an interesting question regarding the original ackley specs not being the same as the SAAMI specs that Nosler did a few years ago. Which version are most guys doing and why?

Nsaqam nailed it. Looking at doing another 280AI with a nine twist this time and slinging nothing but 162Amaxs. That being said my current 10 twist 280AI has had no problems with 162Hornadays and 168VLDs.

Why the AI......Does the standard case NOT have enough capacity to push that round adequately?

Jordan,

What rifle is this and how long is your tube? You mind sharing your load? That's smokin for a 162 in a standard .280, No?

Must be the UBC... wink

The 280AI has a 65Ksi SAAMI MAP which means that not only is there a small case capacity advantage but there is also a 5Ksi pressure advantage over the regular 280 Rem.

Less trimming and factory cartridges and brass are available.

I'm running 168 VLD's at about 2975-3000 from my 25" 9.5 Tw .280AI. That would be your best bet IMO. Slighty more case capacity and pressure but also, no trimming. Win-win. Non magnum.

Rifle is a Ruger Hawkeye S/S with 22" tube (with DBC grin ). Load is 60gr 7828ssc, Fed210 primer, RP brass. It may be smokin' a little, but the brass is going strong on its 11th firing, and I get no pressure signs...

Wow!

Proof that each rifle is unique.

That load is 3.5gr heavier and 300fps faster than any 162gr load I could find on Loaddata.

I'm gonna have to get me some UBC.
