RickF:
In my part of the country - Hurricanes Hardly Ever Don't Happen, Florida - you just don't find a 1-A in 7x57 in the used racks when you're looking for one. People hang on to them. I had to buy a new one. Glad I did, too. Same here, they are hard to find. I'm also fussy, and have a definite bias for the early #1's, even with their POS barrels. I am always on the watch however. For the time being, I make do with my 1981 M700 classic in 7X57. Undoubtedly more accurate than the vast majority of #1A's, but the fondle factor doesn't compare! And don't get me started on the difference in butts!
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

Jim, I have always admired the Ruger #1's. I have never really considered buying one because of the wieght, and the fact that I am a bolt action fan.
One thing I have noticed about every #1 I have seen; all have good wood, most have very good wood, and a few will have excellent wood straight from the factory.
They are a class act, in any caliber.
GB There is only one way to make you a convert. Go buy one and play with it a while. With very little practice, you can get off a second AIMED shot only slightly slower than the average bolt action shooter. Note the emphasis on the word "aimed". No, you'll never equal a trained shooter doing rapid fire match competiton, but if properly done, you can get off a fairly fast second shot. Quite a few years back, a friend of mine's father was bemoaning the fact that he could not find a .375 H&H mag. rifle for a left handed shooter. I suggested a Ruger #1H and he balked becaause it was a single shot. I gave him a short demonstration on just how fast one scould be shot using a #1B in .300 Win. Mag. Then, I let him try using my other #1B in 30-06 and he was hooked. Look at it as a form of ego trip is you want. When you come dragging that buck out of the hills into camp and you're carrying a single shot rifle, well, you get some looks tgat are mighty satisfying to the ego. The nice part about it is, you don't have to tell them just how easy it was. Me? I do it becaause I like the challenge. The one thing you will have to worry about is getting those neat rifles will become an addiction, and no, I never want to be cured. Paul B.

- 7X57 is a woman's caliber, right? So it has to have a female name, right? It is a very beautiful rifle! As to 7X57mm being a woman's gun, tell that to the 800 + elephants W.D.M. Bell killed with his!!

William "Da Man" Bell.
In later years he was known as William "Karamojo" Bell, but Karamojo was just the Swahili translation of "Da Man".
Well, I used to know.

9 3 Guy beat me to the answer but believe it or not I knew what WDM stood for too... such a strange name stuck in my head for some reason.
My No1 is a Liberty Model in .458 Win but it's a real sweetheart and has excellent wood. Mine is unaltered except for a rubber o-ring under the forearm screw and it gives me 1" at 100 with the 500gr Hornady RN at 2125fps - plenty good for a .458 Win IMHO.
I like the short/compactness of the No1 and it's simply a very classy and elegant rifle for the money. Yeah I'm sure a Dakota #10 may have it beat, but for a fraction of the price I say the No 1 is a winner and as mentioned above is virtually 100% ambidextrous. It's also very simple and reliable and having a single shot to work with makes you take that extra second to make that first shot count. I don't feel handicapped in the least with a No 1 in the field for non-DG.

I have one just like it except I think my wood is a little paler, or it could be the photograph.
My does have nice grain/figure though. Much nicer than your average stock gun. I have had mine for a few years. IIRC I paid $450 for it ANIB.
