Think mild mannered 308 and you'll be close.

What kind of rifle?

I used to own one 40 years ago. Very accurate and I worked up to a book maximum of 44 grains IMR-4064. No telling what the pressure was, nor velocity because this was before affordable chronos. Wish I still had it!
Since graduating to the 99 Savage, I don't push so hard!

Several guys here on the 'fire have older Remingtons like that, and I remember a lot of positive comments about how well they shoot.

If you're handloading for it you won't be constrained by the length of the Savage 99 magazine. I have a 700 Classic and it's very easy to load for.

Does anyone know if the stock and scope mounts are comparable to a 700 short action?

Scope mounts should be the same. Stocks are not.

The 300 is my pet caliber. Some time ago I chronied a .308WCF factory load - 150 grain power points at 2700 fps. An appropriate load of Varget behind the same bullet in my .300 Sav. yields 2650 fps. That pretty much whittled down the .308 WCF advantage in my mind. It's good enough for what I'll encounter in the deer woods. Yeah, I know you can drive the .308WCF faster, but the vast majority of the guys are using factory loads to take their game. Most whitetails won't make it more than 40 yards hit correctly with one shot from the .300 savage.

You'll like it unless you're into taking 300 or 400 yard shots. Easy to reload, easy on the shoulder at the range, and death to deer.

How much modification would it take to get a 700 SA stock to fit? The action screws measured the same at the shop.

You might have to relieve the bolt handle area.

Send Mule Deer a PM, I believe he's put one into a 700 Mountain Rifle stock.

The 722 is just a short action 700.

There are a couple of small difference that require inletting to install a 722 in a 700 stock. The tang, safety, and sometime bolt handle inletting need to be changed on a 700 stock when you install a 722 action. Most 722 barrels have a boss, a wide place on the outside of the barrel, where the rear sight is mounted, so that stock would need to be inletted for the barrel boss if your rifle has a boss.

If you use a 700 ADL stock, all you'll need is the 700 ADL trigger guard. If you use a 700 BDL stock, you'll need the 700 BDL bottom metal and a 700 BDL magazine box.

I have a couple of 722s installed in 700 stocks, a 257 Roberts in a 700 BDL stock and a 25-284 installed in a 700 MR stock.

The 300 Savage is a nice cartridge. Think of it as a 90% 308, just a little shorter, a little less case capacity, so a little slower. When I lived in NH, I hunted deer with a Remington 760 in 300 Savage that I reloaded for, using the 170 grain Reminton RNCL 30-30 bullets. They were very effective when fired an 2600 fps.

Good luck!

Fantastic caliber and pleasant on the shoulder. Recently bought a 99-300 and its very accurate and pleasant to shoot. Dropped a 8 point in its tracks and its my new favorite deer rifle now. Wish I hadn't passed up a 700 in that caliber when I saw one in a gun shop.

It's the halfway point between the 30-30 and .30-06 in my mind. A delightful cartridge that has a lot of punch but doesn't punch back too hard.

A lot of people don't know this but the 300 Savage was the inspiration for the 308. The 308 was not a shortened version of a 30-06.
Great deer hunting caliber.
