What are the basic differences in these two models?

The 8400 action was designed for the WSM family of cartridges..the long action version handles the regular mag cartridges like 7mm rem,300 win and 338.

The 84L is a stretched version of the 84m. A 30-06 84L will be a lighter action then a 8400 action in 06. Hope that helps.

That helps. From what I have been able to figure the only difference is about 8 ounces .... wasn't sure if it was in the action or the stock. Went down to my local shop with the intention of ordering a 84L and it will be at least 6 to 8 weeks for either the 25-06 or the 280AI. There is a new 25-06 on GB in the 8400 Classic for about $300 cheaper and was really wondering if the difference was sufficient enough to warrant it.

Well the 25-06 in a Classic version should be around 7# even.
In a 8400 Montana it will be 6# 10 oz.. Now in the new 84L Montana it is listed as 5# 10 oz. and the 84L Classic version should be about 6# 4 oz.. Hope that helps.

Absolutely does help. The weight difference is more like 12 ounces in the classic. Thanks

The 8400 also has the recoil lug exposed ala Rem 700. I like the 84m and 84l way of hiding the washer type lug. Nitpicky but noticeable.
