My buddy got a old 99 savage for cutting down a tree. I can not really tell what model it is. The gun is chambered for a .300 savage and has brass rotary clip with external shell indicator, if i can figure out how to post a pic, i will.

It's an EG or an R. What does the forearm look like?

Is it sort of slim with a schnabel tip or full?

Schnabel = EG

Full = R

Yes, that's a 99R. Serial number puts it as a 1954 manufacture date. Nice solid rifle with a very good reputation for accuracy, though one of the heavier models. Will be factory d&t for a scope, and have factory sling eyes. You'll enjoy that.

The L or J is just an inspectors mark.

Funny how many of these rifle's are kick'n around up here. I bumped into a guy hunting moose up here, he was carrying an octagon barrel 99-f or g , just forget. The guy was in his 70's, said his granddad gave it to him when he was younger. The old guy did not realize what he had in his arm's, i told him it was worth a bit of coin and not get sucked in to giv'n it away, kind of remind's me of cutting down a tree for a gun. LOL. P.S. it also was chambered in 300 savage.

Well if that guy was carrying a F or G with an octagon barrel in 300, I'd venture to guess its actually not worth much at all... especially in Canada. Not sure what you call a "bit of coin" but you might just have convinced that guy his gun was worth a bunch more than reality...

Not every old Savage 99 is worth a lot...
