Usually start eating a Power Bar and a Cliff Bar in the next 3-4 hours, and the same every 3-5 hrs. depending on my activity level. Plenty of protein in both PB's and CB's. Depends on which one you're talking about. The Cliff Builder Bar actually has some protein (it Zones). The regular Cliff Bar is an organic candy bar. The Power Bar is a nasty, tastes-like-crap candy bar.

Power Bars have between 8-9 grams of protein per bar. It comes basically from a soy protein isolate and milk. That means that it is a complete protein, fully useable by the body. The "crappy" flavor comes from their use of Maltodextrin, a easily digested complex carbohydrate which is very popular in energy drinks favored by long distance runners. Bascially because they can drink it and keep on moving unlike solid foods. Cliff Bars have 10-11 g's of protein from primarily soy products. Mixed with the protein from it's other ingredients, it, too, is probably a complete source of protein. So, I guess you are opposed to milk products as a protein source ? E

The "crappy" flavor comes from their use of Maltodextrin, a easily digested complex carbohydrate which is very popular in energy drinks favored by long distance runners. I tried it in a carb/electrolyte drink called HEED...and it tasted bad to me. I couldn't drink the stuff. I like Gatorade Endurance Formula much better...it's got twice the sodium and three times the potassium of regular Gatorade...and it tastes great.

I used to be a big fan of Gatorade. But it isn't an energy drink unless you count the small amount of sugar present. It is designed to reverse the effects of heat exhaustion. Which occurs from the loss of electrolytes by the body. By replacing sodium and potassium, along with plenty of water to flush out the extra salts, it works. But has almost no food value or caloric value. Power Bars or Cliff Bars also have lots of sodium and potassium and take care of that as well. Yes, you need to drink extra water when eating them. E

Gross. Spam is made from anuses and nostrils and lips, and [bleep] like that. Anything in a tortilla is good though...you could put a turd in a tortilla and it'd do.

Kinda like weiners, bologna, and Vienna sausages. They've got all of the choice cuts in em'. The meat packers certainly wouldn't skimp on products such as these.
Actually, it's not ribeyes, T-bones, and backstraps that cause me to be a carnivore...it's Spam. Nothing like a canned meat product that we can keep in the basement for years in case the fridge goes out because of a nuclear war.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture does not permit any nonmeat fillers in lunchmeat, nor does it allow pig snouts, lips, or ears. For me its my own homemade granola w/chopped nuts & powdered milk and then dehydrated apples. On a real cold AM I'll have a cup of hot cocoa too. Then I'm off to find the wizard!
MtnHtr Me too, it's the same thing I eat at home, except the powdered milk, and I don't make my own granola but buy it at the Vitamin Cottage. Granola, walnuts, dried fruit for later on, and coffee. I figure the closer I can keep what I eat on the trail to what I eat at home, the better off I'll be. If I know I'll be climbing before the breakfast has a chance to digest, I'll scarf some quick energy in the form of gel while still ensconced in the bag.

I've only tried Clif and Gu, Clif is OK but Gu has better flavors. I like the fact that you can get both with or without caffeine.
