Interesting that "a 300 Savage load" should be mentioned. Never thought of that tack. The 130 TSX is a deadly killer on deer sized game and can be pushed to 2800+ in my 99R with 35.5 of 4198. Yes 4198 .... whod'a thought ? Knocks Deer and Antelope flat. Yeah 99s work fine even "way out west". Might be a good start in that short barrelled Winny. Adult Mulie doe 80 yards offhand 99 R: Pal's nice buck at 140 yards, 99 EG

I noticed in my research that 760 gives top velocity, I do have some 760 here also, what do you think BSA, should I try it? Short answer: I wouldn't.

Very managable and very accurate. It was also great fun for practice because it was easy on the shoulder even with its metal butt plate . I also have the utmost respect for the little cartridge as I know of some people that have taken elk with theirs around here.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Side side note here, but I see that my Horn manual lists 41.4 as a max with R15 and a 180 for a speed of 2400 with a 22" tube. And then the Speer manual has a 22" tube and allows 45 as a max for a max speed of 2613.
Question being, which of the two speeds do we use as a max? IMO 213 fps is a ton load of diff tween what a couple manuals.
Just a thunk

Mark, seems to me the manuals that give pressures AND velocity are the ones a guy can reliably hang a hat on as to real-world speeds.
As an example, Hodgdon Basic Reloaders Manual gives 45.0 Varget with a 175 for 2,690 fps @ 48,600 CUP from a 24" bbl.
A 308 can certainly handle up to 51,000 CUP. It's pretty easy to extrapolate 2,600+ with a 180 bullet from a 22" 308 is a very realistic thing. I tend to think a guy can pile on enough RL15 or Varget into a 22" bbl'd 308 with a 180 to safely achieve 2,600 fps no problem. To me it's less about the gr charge than the velocity that is reasonable. 2,620 IMO/E is reasonable.
Obviously auto-loaders are a different matter...

Dober Saw the same thing, only thing I could think of is the Speer bullet is softer, if there is such a thing with jacketed bullets?? My practice is usually go with the manual that uses the same bullet brand as Im using.

Sierra has 41.3grs RE15 with a velocity of 2500 with a 26" tube.

If one type of 180 can go 2,600 safely in a 22" bbl., so can any other type of 180... but the load may have to be adjusted up or down accordingly.

But Mac, I think that would be the pressure for the barrel/chamber tested in and not others though...right?
Also, what do you recon that the manuals that don't give pressure data use to form their idea as to what top end should be? Guessing I'm thinking they have a way to measure pressure but choose not to list it. Maybe..?

But Mac, I think that would be the pressure for the barrel/chamber tested in and not others though...right? Absolutely... but again, pressure=velocity, velocity=pressure. If a manual gives 180/2,610 with a CUP reading, it's safe to assume your rifle of the same barrel length (or dropping/adding 25 fps per inch to extrapolate) can go right there too... however, depending on your chamber and barrel you may need MORE or LESS powder than the manual suggests. Guys get too hung up on the charge a manual lists and ignore velocities. If a "book" load in my rifle is giving significantly more velocity than the manual suggests (coupled with their pressure readings) I BACK OFF, even if it's a "book" load. At least I do that now-a-days... when I was younger I just ignorantly assumed "cool... I got a fast barrel" and rocked-on. There is no such thing as slow or fast barrels... there's just pressure that creates velocities and there is no free lunch. The variables that change pressure are numerous and beyond just the barrel or chamber.

Mark, if they're publishing, they're pressure testing rest assured. I think it's too bad the manuals don't give that data. Hodgdon sure does though and I love them for it.

Guessing that's my wonder one manual says 2400 and one says 2613 for speed so which one does one choose? I think it has to do with the individual barrel and chamber.
And I guess in the end I do believe in fast and slow barrels but that's just my experience sans pressure testing machine of course. But using the old redneck method of testing I do feel that fast/slow tubes do exist.
I remember David Miller telling me that he wouldn't be suprised to see 200 fps diff tween 10 different barrels all cut with the same reamer. That to me would suggest that the fast/slow barrel deal is real.

I hear the thinking Mark and agree some barrel/chamber combos create higher pressure and some create lesser pressure. I guess we can call them "fast and slow" but it seems to me with a "slow barrel" we can juice it up to match what a manual with pressure data says, and with the "fast" there is no free lunch (pressure=velocity) and we may need to back off a book load if we're well over what pressure tested data says we should expect.
I think we're mostly saying the same thing, just in a different way...

The rule of thumb I've been told by a ballistic lab technician is that every 10,000th of an inch in bore diameter raises or drops pressure by about 1000 psi. And 1000 psi in a typical modern rifle round means a change in velocity of about 25 fps in a 3000 fps load.
This means that a .30 caliber barrel that's a dead-nuts .3080" in bore diameter would be 200 fps faster than a barrel of .3088" bore diameter--and I have seen some .309" bores on factory rifles. The same technician told me he's seen custom pressure barrels from the same company that varied several 10,000ths in the same caliber.
So yeah, there are slow and fast barrels--but there aren't any barrels that get "extra" velocity without extra pressure.
That doesn't take into account differences in throating, number and width of grooves, etc. Or, perhaps even more important, different bullets. They vary not only in diameter from brand to brand, but bearing surface, inner hardness and friction of the jacket material.
Frankly, I'm often amazed at how closely data from different places agrees on occasion.

BSA, it's not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing, it's a matter of individual rifles and bullets... plenty of manuals will give 45 gr's Varget or RL15 with a 180 in the 308 Win. I used to run 45gr varget with 180gr SST in my 7600, for 2625fps. Actually 46 gr was fine too, but accuracy was better at 45gr.

Of all the powders I play with it seems RL powders are least consistant from lot to lot. The couple containers of re15 I tried seemed slower than data would suggest. All things considered here's what QL thinks you can get to at 62k pressure with a 180 in a 308 with 24" barrel. I understand the new MR2000 powder may take us further. Anyone who loads 308 knows there are some significant diff's in brand of case and capacity. Also alot of newer guns are showing up with freebore. So the usual disclamer....work up....
