Saw a 99 in the local shop today. I think it is a EG in 300sav with serial # in the 58xxxx range. Stock looks great (no holes), checkered pistol grip, straight schnabel forend. Bluing shows thinning on the left side of the receiver but no pitting and the barrel crown is white. Price $595. I have a 60s 99e (economy) in 308 so 300 savage is not that attractive but I reload several 30 cals. This is only the 2nd 99 I have seen in this store in 4 yrs. What do you experts think?

D&T for scope ? (that would be wrong I believe) Sounds like top dollar for an OK EG.
I'd look at the EGs SOLD on Gunbroker and Auction Arms to see what they are bringing. IME, in a depression (as we're in) mint guns hang on to their value the longest. Average shooters get cheaper faster.

Not D&T. Case color excellent on the lever. I was thinking it was high.

High but not real high depending on where you are. From what I've been told 99s in that part of the country are somewhat scarce and priced accordingly. Then again, Canadian Joe thinks that EGs are only fit to be tomato stakes. Go figure.

That serial number puts the manufacturing date in late 1950 or early 1951. Either mfg. date makes that one of the finest, highest quality Model 99s ever built... and it sounds like it is an "EG", my favorite model!

$595 isn't an out-of-sight price here in the mid-west (you're in Lexington, Ky... that's about 150 miles south of my home just north of Dayton, Ohio). EGs in 90% and above condition easiy bring that price and more in the tri-state area.

Frankly, I'd rather have the EG in .300 Savage than an E in .308... especially an early-to-mid 1950s EG like the one of which you're asking about, but that's just "different stokes for different folks".

If I didn't already have a pristine 1953 EG, I'd very quickly pay $595 for that rifle. However, that said... I'd bet you can buy it for less if you walk into that store with CASH!!! I'd offer $500 "out-the-door" (including tax) and lay five $100 bills on the counter. That should start the "bargaining".

You may end up paying $550... but that rifle is well worth that amount... especially if that price INCLUDES $35-$40 sales tax.

One caution-check the bore CAREFULLY. But given the excellent condition of the rifle, I'd bet the bore is just fine as well! smile

As noted not all parts of the country are loaded with 99`s.
So if you like it buy it.

Well, I pulled the trigger in the EG. Price 575 + tax for 609.50 final price. The bore is beautiful, it turns out the gun was sort of a consignment so the seller made 10% from me plus what ever the consigner buys with the money from this gun. Serial#5912xx LBC - 2B. Wood is in great shape, one small ding, no cracks stockand good relief space behind the reciever. Blue 95+%, so I am happy! smile

Not a steal, but a solid investment. I bought one in about 90% condition for $300. I would have bought 100 of them at that price! While not rare, unmolested EGs are getting harder to find.

Congrats on a nice rifle. If deer size game are what you hunt the 130 TSX backed by 37 gr of 4198 will get you very close to 3000 and kills like the hammer of Thor. 3 in 1" @ 100 with a 4X scope is easy.

My pal and his 09' buck taken with an ancient EG.

Seen that pic before Framis (aka Larry Root aka many other names). You initially claimed that as being your picture, you cross-eyed, drooling m-[bleep]. Zip your fly up next time.

To OP, sorry this troll is pirating your thread, but liars need to be called out.

Mike why are you telling a lie. I NEVER claimed that was me, and your interest in man's fly being undone is disturbing. As a point of fact that's a button fly that is an lightweight overlayer on another pair of trousers as it's nippy in WY early in the AM and it is not open. Sorry you missed the thrill, perhaps you are on the wrong website ? I accept you apology.

Here is mine 99 EG, can you tell the difference?

Guess you DKS about EGs, Alaskans or Stith Mounts ?

Scope and Mount are worth as much as he paid for rifle (hint: TK Lee)
You also missed the 100% blue, cc and 3x wood too.

Here's a better pic to help you.

Tbury - You got a great rifle at a fair price !
For a 99EG / 300SAV in good condition, I would
give $600 any day of the week.

Maybe it's a NZ thing. From being a history buff, there were a lot of strange goings on at those "Public" (we'd call them private) schools. Ask Winston Churchill !

You got a very good buy... and that LBC ("2B") indicates your rifle was manufactured in 1950... congratulations and welcome to the "99 Club" and the Forum! smile

After many tests of many powder and component combinations, I settled on a whitetail hunting load of 40.8 grains of H4895 behind a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip sparked by a standard Winchester large rifle primer in Winchester cases. This combination groups at less than .75 inches at 100 yards with a chronographed muzzle velocity of 2635 fps. This is a very consistent load with a velocity deviation of just 3 fps (+1 fps/-2 fps) in my Model 99 "EG" rifle in .300 Savage caliber.

This load is .1 of a grain under the published maximum load for H4895 and shows NO high pressure signs in my 1953 EG with a 24-inch barrel. Incidentally, H4895 is one of Hodgdon's "EXTREME" powders which means the powder is not "temperature sensitive"... a claim I've found to be true. Therefore, the muzzle velocity produced by this load is, for all intents and purposes, the SAME at 'most all air temperatures, a claim a good many powders can NOT make.

This load, when sighted in 2.75 inches high at 100 yards, has a POINT-BLANK RANGE of 250 yards wherein the hunter can hold "dead on" his target from the muzzle all the way out to 250 yards without any "hold-over" or "hold-under" sighting and the bullet is never more than 3-inches above or below the line-of-sight. This is an excellent eastern whitetail load. smile
