Looks like I drew a NM elk tag in unit 34 sept. 13-22nd. I pulled up the map and the area looks like the elk gods have blessed me this year. The fella that applied w/ me had to back out because he knocked up his girl and the due date is that week. What a bummer for him. If anyone has drawn a tag in this area give me a shout I'm looking to pair up. Any of you guys hunted that area?
Probably should have posted in the elk forum but I took a peek in there and felt this forum is on a higher level

It is a great tag and prey for rain! It is awful dry and currently closed until rain levels improve. There are good bulls in there as well plenty of places to move around. I wish I could help, but other than hiking have never hunted it.
Congrats!
Good Shooting!

You should be fine with the monsoon storms and that area usually closes for the fourth due to dry conditions and fireworks. G&F or Forest service website has closures and restrictions. Good luck!
Scopolamine I posted on the elk forum. I drew 52-elk, love it!
Good Shooting!

Here's some info on Lincoln National Forest and the closures. Almost the whole unit is full of elk- except for the lowest areas East of Mayhill and Duncan. There are some good areas bordering the Mescalero Reservation if you can find an active spring during the September Hunt. Lincoln National Forest- Home

Thanks Sandhill. I looked at the unit map and I didnt notice any roads or streams that separate the Res from the public land. I hunted unit 2c for mulies a few years ago and there was a fence and signs that separate the Jic Res from the unit. Is that the case in this area?

Yes- It's usually marked clearly. You can order the BLM maps that show decent detail of the roads and especially property boundaries.
