Need to know if .308 is enough for pig in california.
Since you mean to hang me Id like to atone to my maker. Where to begin. I regret having trifled with married women. Im thoroughly ashamed of having cheated at cards. I deplore my occasional departures from the truth. Forgive me for having taken your name in vain, my Saturday drunkenness, my Sunday sloth. Above all forgive me for the men that I have killed in anger and for those that I am about to. - Jedadiah Nightlinger

better question is what made you think the .308 is not enough for pigs?

Why waste good quality lead with a .308?

My only current gun for game, besides a shotgun and a .22LR is a .308 Winchester. I'd say it would be enough for any big game animal in North America in the lower 48.
Pigs get harvested all the time with .223 calibers too. It stands to reason that a .308 would be plenty. Bullet placement is what it's about.

The 308 will do just fine. They aren't bullet proof. I have killed quite a few with a 308. Matter of fact, I have killed several with a 223 shooting a 65 gr. Sierra GameKing.

Dad always hunted California pigs with his .308 Win/Browning BLR. He used 165 gr handloads, Speer bullets mostly as I recall. The combination worked great.

Need to know if .308 is enough for pig in california. Oh yeah. Used to raise pigs and the little ol 222 would to the trick on them, so I'd imagine the 308 would work just as well I'd use the good ol hornady 150 sp interlock.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Need to know if .308 is enough for pig in california. Unless ya'lls porkers are a super strain that is resistant to lead poisoning, you can use just about anything you want. My go to recipe for DRT hogs is to draw and imaginary line between their ear and shoulder. Then place your bullet about two inches down on that line. Severs their spine. They drop and paddle. Don't have to track. Best GWB 308 Winchester, 150 gr, Sierra Spitzer 7 mag, 140 gr. Accubond 7mm-08, 140 gr. Accubond 270 Winchester, 130 gr. Ballistic Tip 260 Remington, 130 gr. Nice photos!
As to the original question, I think of a short-barreled .308win when I think of a pig gun, although I've killed 200lb+ pigs with .22cal, 6mm, and 6.5mm centerfires. There was no issue, provided you used a good bullet and stuck it right.
As a side note, we here in LA get to start using supressors on pigs and coyotes in August. I've never had a can but now have a bit more reason to try one.....(grin)

Had a buddy that came with me to fill feeders all the time. He would carry various guns to shoot pigs, I'd let him shoot first. When the pigs scattered they'd usually stop for a few seconds at the edge of the brush. We would be 50 yards or less from them, I'd shoot a second one with my MK2 ruger.... 22 LR HP in the lungs.... never lost one with that pistol.....
Shot placement.
308 is more than enough.
Buddy shot a 400 plus pounder one morning... 44 mag and 240 lead... Wife killed one over 350 with her bow.... Fact is I don't think I"ve seen one shot with a gun larger than 7.62x39 that I can recall other than one big boar I shot this spring with a 308...
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

Need to know if .308 is enough for pig in california. It kills them quite well in Louisiana, with "soft" bullets and less than full steam loads too.

I've been using a 22-250 in Oklahoma, but who knows what they could be on in California.

Maybe those non lead bullets you use out there need to be .375 or bigger? I use a .308 in Texas.. Working on making my old Minnesota Deer rifle (Rem 7400 .30-06) into a night time pig gun.
