Has anyone heard that Marlin has discontinued the 1897 Cowboy .22.

I don't see the "Cowboy" model listed in Marlin's 2001 or 2002 catalog. They do list a "Texan" that looks the same to me but I'm not sure what differences to look for. Why don't you check out this link 1997T to the description of the Texan and decide for yourself if they are the same gun with a different name. Hope this helps.

I think I got the last one with the long barrel. That's the way I like them. I need to go get it out of lay-a-way and see how it will shoot. Im sure you can still get a long barrel at a gun show. I gave fair warning I intended to be the first shooter to max a Black Death target with a cowboy action rifle, but its going to cost me another two hundred bucks to prove it. Be the first and beat Uncle John to the punch.

Hi John

Yep, looks like you're right about the barrel lengths. I missed that when I checked on them in the book. The Cowboy has a 24" one while the Texan's is 20". Overall lenghts are 4" difference to, so sounds like the only difference is with the barrels and magazine. Been looking for a decent used 1897 to add to my own collection but haven't had much luck at the gun shows around here. But then most the fun is in the hunt.
Good luck maxing the Black Death with your new lever action. At least you know if you can't do it then it must be the gun in your case. I would like to see more than one Marlin used that can beat this target though.
BTW - Thanks for the kind words on the other thread. Was glad to help out getting a target that more shooters can use.
