At 5:30 pm woman was walking in Carlton Co. MN. She was attacked while walking her dog. The tried to fight it off with a small stick and her fists. Her dog got chased off by the bear and the attack continued. How about another picnic basket Yogi? GWN

Is she OK? We have had several attacks thisyear, although more by grizzlies.
Life's too short to hunt with an ugly gun.

GWN - near what town? Not to make light of the attack, but that sounds exactly like the "hero dog" reaction that I would have expected from my faithful companion when I was growing up - probably would have riled up the bear and then led it to me. Best, John

Best, John I would like to know where to find out mnore about this attack. Hope the lady is OK! Having a dog lead a Black Bear back to you has happened many times. I have often thought about trying to hunt bears just that way. My luck though I would get arrested for cruelty to animals. There was a place near here where a cougar would jump out of the woods and attack dogs when people were walking along the logging roads there. I thought of getting a dog from the pound and taking it and my gun for a walk but never got around to it.
I don't know what my cattle dogs would do around a bear but my old Rhodesian ridgebacks wouldn't have quit on me. They loved a good scrap.

The short article Lawdog linked to said, " She was reported in good condition Saturday after surgery at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth."
We may know the time Ben Carson lied, but does anyone know the time Hillary Clinton told the truth?

Interesting, sounds like a PO'd bear rather than a predatory attack, maybe the dog triggered the attack like folks have said.
I have heard of folks using the family dog as bait to lure in coyotes, and have been shadowed by coyotes myself a couple of times, prob'ly on account of the dogs.
I ain't run into a bear with my dogs, but I'll bet my 40lb full heeler would PO the bear by barking at it and nipping at its heels, then come running back to me, PO'd bear in tow.
My gutsy little 30 lb heeler/sheepdog mix would insert herself between the bear and me and be dead in about two seconds, then the bear would take me out while my bigger heeler continued to bark and snap at its hindquarters.
I expect the heeler would live to tell the tale though, she can run pretty fast <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
I dunno if actual working ranch heelers would act different from that.
