I went up the Noatak River about 20 miles a week ago. On the river, underway, no Deet needed. Landed and hiking, 23% Deet is good for about 5 minutes before re-application is needed.

A half hour later, even with two applications, the black Lab was grey, and begging to turn around and get back on the river.

I gotta find some stronger stuff..... none carried in local stores, curiously enough - I guess that's why they make airplane rides to Anchorage.

If it don't melt paint- don't buy it. smile

That's my kinda thinking. If it's tolerable enough that 20% deet will do, I'll just get bit.

If it's bad enough that I need 100%, nothing else will do. Pass the red bottle please....

In the Adirondacks, the deer flies just lick the 20% Deet off like icing. I can't imagine trying to use that in Alaska... Hopefully I'll get an early frost in Togiak in Sept., but my two headnets came in, I have hats and gloves, duct tape and a bunch of 100% Deet.

Regards,

Chuck

Make sure TSA allows your bug dope on the checked luggage.
I buy mine when I get up to Anchorage.

Bugs here laugh at "frost". You need a hard freeze to knock the population down.

At 28 - 30 degrees, I think they just stay warm in the duff and leaves. Temps to 20 or colder reach down into that organic material to make an effect.

If you take the time it takes, it takes less time.

Damn, I'm surprised they haven't evolved to stay around all winter ...

Got back from 5th lake (lake kulik) yesterday. It's not to far from togiak lake. I didn't put any bug dope on for the entire 4 days i was there. Then again it was blowing 30 to 40 knots and pouring for the majority of the time. Not really a fair assesment of the bugs if you know what i mean.
