On a similar note, a classmate of mine in 7th grade thought it would be interesting to stick a 22 long rifle into the ground nose first and shoot it with a bb gun. He lost an eye to the shrapnel.

Why would one do that? Do you think it is like the caps you played with as a kid?
Thank goodness my Dad spent some time educating me in the fact that guns and bullets are tools, and dangerous tools when used incorrectly, and not toys to be played with.
The question itself notes a lack of sense.

Anybody that's used a Lee Loader a bit knows the answer to this question Used a Lee Loader as a kid over 10 seasons and never saw one go off. But then again I never simply put a primer out and whacked it with a hammer either. Judging from the comments here, my childhood prediction as to outcome was right on. Started reloading with a Lee Classic Loader, and my 243 set would pop a cap every 100 cases or so. Only one that did, but it would definitely wake you up and leave some black soot on your hands. Wife didn't like that, either.

Started on Lee Loaders in the 1980's. Never popped a primer with a Lee Loader.

I need a beer.

The question itself notes a lack of sense. Hitting an entire box of the old style (50s era) caps with a big hammer would make a lot of noise. Lots of the things posted here, both by myself and others, notes a lack of sense. So does jumping off a bridge 40 feet above the water into a lake.

In the stupid invincibility of youth my brothers and I used to find the largest nut we could. We'd then screw a bolt in about halfway through the nut. We'd tear the red part of matches off and fill the other half of the nut with it. Screw on another opposing bolt and tighten it, squeezing the match heads between the bolts until we didn't dare to tighten them any more. We'd then take the device out to the paved road and throw it down. If it hit right the match heads would explode and the bolts would go flying with incredible force.
We stopped doing this my brother had one of those big bolts nick his ear on it's way to who knows where. Amazing we lived through childhood. Yes, we used to do exactly the same thing. Let a big one go on a concrete tennis court once, picked up one bolt with the nut, and wondered where the other bolt had got to. It came out of the sky about 10 seconds later. My mate and I looked at each other and just said 'How friggin' high did that go...'
