I load the Barnes 400 grain Original for my .45-70 Guide Gun. I have use it on black bear and my brother used one of my handloads on a bison. Great performance on both.

I do have one box of the Remington 405 grainers loaded up, but I have had great luck with Barnes out of several guns and stuck with them for the hunts.

I have two loads, one a 325 grain FTX and one a 350 grain North Fork. I use the 325 for shots that are expected to be 150 yards or more on light skinned animals and the 350 for shots less than 200 yards on the big baddies. The 325 is good, but not for strong enough for close range shots.

350 gn. Hornady round or flat nose, the 405 gn. Woodleigh is a tough customer as well.

The 350 Hornady is one of the best jacketed bullets for the price. They are definitely not only a deer bullet. people have been using them on elk, bear, and moose. they come in flat or round nose and both work equally well.

I don't know if I'd trust the 325 flex tip on bigger animals.

You can drive the Speer as fast as a 350 Horn.

Going in the other direction, check out the Barnes accuracy load for their 250 gr. TSX FN. It's with Vv N120 at 2,500+ fps and is a Marlin '95 load . Does bad stuff to hogs.

Remington 405 driven along by a case full of Benchmark. It'll kill whatever walks the globe, and you will likely reach your recoil limit before the rifle does. blush

Hard to find anymore since being discontinued, but my 1st vote goes to the Nosler 300gr partitions. They were what I used on my moose last year. After that I like the Hornady 350 grainers and cast bullets that are gas checked.

The Hornady 350 gr. at about 1800 fps or the Speer 400 gr. or Remington 405 gr. at about 1600 fps would be good choices. At those velocity levels the recoil will not be too unreasonable, trajectory usable to about 200 yards if you know what you are doing and terminal performance will be very good.

I drive the 400 gr speer 2153 in a 20 inch octagon barrel 1895 Hodgedon load 55gr H322 Starline brass CCI 200 primer at what they say is 39,900 cups. My rifle shoots 1" @ 100yrds
!8.5 " guide gun may lose 50+fps (ported barrel)
It's an elk thumper, the bullet is a good one--may not be an A-Frame but half the price and dead elk is dead elk!

Heck,

I only drive mine at 1900+ ft/sec and it killed a 1 ton Bison in one shot.

Sad thing is Speer wont rate it for Big Bears.

Check out "Double Tap" ammo
http://www.doubletapammo.com

It's the best!!! Their 405gr SP works like a hot knife through butter on black bears and hogs.
