YOU ARE LUCKY! I have hiked a few times and always saw elk. Beautiful country. There are camp sites where you park and plenty of inexpensive hotels minutes from the parking area. Good luck!
Good Shooting!

Lucky dog. I was hunting unit 51 and one of the guys in camp the Sargents and his hunt was over the first mourning. You could hear multiple Elk bugling from the parking lot. He looked over at least 50 Bulls before taking a nice 6x7 (around 300-320) not huge but for a one day hunt pretty good.
Get horses or Mules if possible. Ron Schala and John Senna are outfitters who know the area well and have horses. There are other good outfitters but I don't have any first hand experience with them.

Sounds like good news. I'm pumped! Now I Gotta get some scouting done to see how the drought has affected the area.

The northern edge of New Mexico had average to slightly above snow this winter. We have had a dry spring but are getting a few thunder showers now. Chama area should be only slightly dryer than normal. You drew a great unit. Good luck. KDJ

nicest, easiest elk hunting I've ever done was in that unit. Killed my first bull there. Hope for heavy snow to the north to drive them down to you. The area is so flat it is easily hunted on foot. And it is quite fun to watch a herd of elk from a hill side while a pair of horse hunters ride into the same drainage. They filter out right quick sometimes.
Save an elk, shoot a cow.
