I really like the Black Cloud 12ga 3" #3. We have used them the last couple years with good success. Most of our shooting is over decoys so we are not really pushing our range too far.

1 3/8 ounces of #2 steel in a 3 or 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge load has worked OK for me...I buy whatever is cheapest.

Have used the cheap Fedral 3" 1 1/8 steel #4 shot at 1550fps. for several yrs.. It works great to 45-50yds. which is plenty as most of our ducks are shot over decoys. Just bought two cases for 99.95 each shipped (less than 10.00 a box) cant go wrong in my opinion. Also bought 7 boxes of Rem. Hypersteel i beleive its called 1700fps to try but haven't used it yet, well see. Just my .02 worth, YMMV

I load two basic shells for ducks. Rio/cheddite/multihull/fed pb. With 1 1/8oz of #3 steel about 176 pellets depending on batch, in a LBC43 wad. Steel or bluedot powder at 1400-1475fps. And a 3" remington hull, steel powder, 130 #1 steel in a mm1230 or mm1275 wad at 1400+ fps.

I stumbled on to Winchester 2 3/4" #3. I wanna say they called it the supreme or somethin like that. I dont believe it was the drylok stuff but it might have. It was $9.99 a box so I jumped on it. Killed more often and had way way less cripples than amny type of ammo with #2's or #4's that I have ever tried.

This link will take you to the only US CONSEP table published on the internet (that I know of). The data is based on Tom Roster and associates 25+ years of examining dead ducks for steel pellet penetration. Might be of some use to you. I find 12 gauge, 3", #3 steel, shot in a Light Modified choke (Benelli Trulok "Decoy" Choketube) to be devastating - I am using Winchester Drylok ammo - getting 60% patterns at 40 yards.

So that all covers the sitting over decoys but what if you were jumpshooting woodies and mallards while walking creekbeds? Would you shoot a differnet shell/load?

Enjoy the hunt while it lasts!
