JM, here is my advice. Hunt more. Screw with meaningless stuff less. The result will be more meat in the fridge. ----------------- Lol... j/k. I'd vote 300 WSM in a rifle that suits the shooter. Very, very versatile. _________________________

I don't think there's a "best"....there are a lot that qualify, because we have had so much superfluous overlap in cartridge performance the last 80 years as manufacturers hand us different cartridges that basically do the same things....examples of cartridges that will handle this stuff easily are(in no particular order):
260 Rem, 6.5x55,7x57,7/08,270 Winchester/280 Remington(twins),264 Win Mag, 7 RM, 7 Weatherby,7mm WSM,STW, 270 Weatherby and WSM,30/06,308,300WSM, 300 Winchester,300H&H,300Weatherby....on and on ad nauseum,ad infinitum....all of them and others will work,and I think there might have been a "best" once but no longer.
Some shoot flatter and go faster...with heavier or lighter bullets;and some will have favorites among these but I think all will do the job if good bullets are used and pointed right.
My personal pick is a 270 or a magnum capacity 7mm.I really don't care which one I carry, but I like them both.JMHO.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

.35 Whelen, it can be loaded stout enough for elk and milder for game that is not as tough. I'll be taking mine whitetail deer hunting again this year with 210gr. Noslers or 225gr. Sierras backed by IMR 4064. I have been practicing since last season with 200gr. cast bullets over 15gr. unique, very accurate yet economical at the same time.

What do you think is the best chambering out there for hunting North American big game from elk down?
(Elk, Black Bear, Mule deer, Whitetail, Blacktail, Pronghorn, Hogs etc)
JM ...........Greetings from the Tahiti overlooking the Pacific. Even on vacation, I still post up. For better all around bullet selection for use on hogs up to and including elk and for the longer ranged shots if needed, either a 300 Win or a 300 WSM would be my top choices followed by a faster 7mm like the Remy or Wby Mag as close second choices. For the 280 and 30-06 buffs, who think that most of the shooting world revolves or should revolve around those two? Don`t tell anybody (ssshhhhh), but the 300 Win, 300 WSM and 7mm Remy mag can also be loaded down to approximate 280 and 30-06 levels.
28 Nosler,,,,300WSM,,,,338-378 Wby,,,,375 Ruger

podunk we have better bullets today ,too, which levels the playing field a lot among cartridges.. ..the cartridge is just the engine....the bullet is what kills.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

I couldn't agree more. Its fun to let the inner loony run anon nut sometimes you just have to look at things practically.... seems that some of us have that ability, while others do not.

30-06 of course. You can even use it on squirrels. Or anything based on it's case.

I like 7-08 a bunch, it's awesome, but you won't catch me saying it's "best" for elk... unless, perhaps, the shooter is not tolerant of recoil. Now if someone says that I'm saying a 7-08 won't kill elk I swear I'm gonna crawl up this phone line and open up a can of WHUPASS!

Maybe one day you'll save up enough nickels to own one. Until then, stay bare footed, keep wearing the straw hat and shooting your musketoon.

Sorry to touch a nerve there by poking fun at your beloved Brownings, but it's almost as much fun as watching your sister earn the likker money from the backseat of that old Chevy.
