I have a 77 .257 UL that will pretty consistently shoot 1.5 MOA if you let the barrel cool a little. Since I don't intend on shooting a rapid five or 10 shot group at a game animal, that seems acceptable for my purposes. I have rifles that are much more accurate, but I don't like carrying them as much. It's all in your priorities.

Jim
The M77 Mk II magazine capacity is one round less than the tang safety M77. That is one change Bill Ruger insisted on when the rifle was redesigned. In a side by side comparison you can tell the difference quite easily. I have never had a problem with the flat spots on the stocks and I own both styles of Rugers. Back in the 70s a gunsmith named Lowell Manley had quite a business going on slimming down and re contouring the original M77 stocks.
Thanks, Bill

Yeah, I remember Lowell Manley. He did a pretty good job at making the fore end look like the Winchester featherweight too, schnable and all.
Wonder what happened to him, and the guy who did the re-checkering work?
There was a smith named Ron Reimer about that time too. Wonder what happened to him also?

I don't know. It's a shame when some of the good smiths disappear. I guess we are getting older! Thanks...Bill.

I've got a Ruger 77-17, with the flats in the tang and trigger guard/mag. I used a sanding block and 50 grit and re-contured the stock to suit ME! Then refinished with an oil finish. This turned out FABULOUS, (in my eyes at least!) Virgil B.
