But it's not the usual suspects... it's a Mennonite College. I'm not sure what to think.. a conservative religious college, banning the Star Spangled Banner. It is un-American? very American? politically correct? not politically correct? My head is about to explode. I'm going to the ABC thread for awhile....

Indiana College bans National Anthem

Indiana College Bans "Too Violent" National Anthem
First it banned the words, now the whole song

Tiny Goshen College in Indiana has banned the "The Star Spangled Banner: at all sporting events because the Mennonite school's president considers the National Anthem's words to be too violent.

The 1,000-student school had already banned the words last year, but the band could still play the music for patriots in attendance. Now, the school has banned the song entirely, according to NBC Sports.

The schools board of directors told college President Jim Brenneman to find an alternative to playing the National Anthem that fits with sports tradition, that honors country and that resonates with Goshen Colleges core values and respects the views of diverse constituencies.

Brenneman was okay with that.

I am committed to retaining the best of what it means to be a Mennonite college, while opening the doors wider to all who share our core values, Brenneman said. And I invite others to join us at Goshen College as we make peace in all of its forms, even with the national anthem.

Art professor John Blosser told The Goshen News that there is much national pride at the school, but that most people aren't going to blindly accept what the country does.

NBC Sports' Rick Chandler weighed in, saying: "I suppose we could have followed the example of the Mennonites and simply fled, giving the nation back to the British. But then wed all be playing cricket."

Murphy was an optimist.

I wonder if they know the other verses to the Star Spangled Banner? It's chalk full of references to God....

I also wonder if the Bible is banned for being too violent?

Mathew 11:12 "The Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force!"

A lot of Hookies kill their mentally retarded children (and there are a few, due to the inbreeding); of course they are all "farm accidents", not violent in any way or shape....

Those that made this horrible decision at Indiana College are fools, unpatriotic, gutless fools to be exact.

If my kid was attending there I would pull them out immediately!

I don't know much about Mennonites. Are they pacifists?

Thanks.
That may explain this pathetic banning deal.

Goshen College needs to lose any state and federal funding which they get. This is a load of B.S.

I think originally the Mennonites,Amish, and Quakers were called Anabaptists and they are all pacifists.

I could be wrong.

Yeah, they're all pacifists, as you say. Very close to the Amish, but without the ban on technology. They just can't have the flashy stuff -- i.e., Amish won't own a car, Mennonites just won't own one that's any color other than black, dark blue, etc., as it would be considered flashy.

Did you hear about the Amish girl who got in trouble? She loved two mennonite.

Reminds me, somehow, of the pre-TSA airport screener who confiscated my buddy's Remington 870 tie bar because she'd been told to take "anything that looks like a gun."

(Good thing I wasn't there trying to board a 'plane with my USS Nautilus tie bar!)

Very much so. The Amish are the most conservative of the many Mennonite sects.

Thanks, RC.
That reminds me, we have a few Mennonites in our area, don't we?
Seems like I remember seeing a Mennonite church in Filer a few years back?

There are Mennonite churches in both Filer and Buhl, but not the same sect. The Buhl bunch is far more conservative and legalistic. They're the ones who have their women wear the black buns on their heads and those long pastel colored dresses. Somehow they figure that Paul's instructions for women to dress modestly means that they have to dress ugly. I don't read that in scripture at all.
