working on loads for both rifles and trying to settle on one powder for both . right now i am leaning toward the 150 hndy flat base for the 308 . the 7mm-08 I have had for years and have used the 139 hndy and the 140 btip a lot and am happy with either but am open to any standard bullet load for deer in the 120 to 150 weight.

RL15 will give you more velocity, Varget is more temp insensative. I personally use varget in .308, 338-06, 30-06 and as soon as it's finished 6.5x47 Lapua.

somewhere around 45 grains varget in a 7-08 with a 120NBT should make you happy. Have no experience with .308.

Varget works well in my 708, not so good in my 308s, RE15 works well in both, might wanna try PP2000MR if you want extra velocity, that powder works very well in my 308, and Im going to load some 162AMAXs in the morning with the 2000MR.

46.5g of Varget with 150gr bullets shoots the best for me in my 308.

42 grains of Varget and a 140 ballistic tip in my 7-08 is remarkable. One hole groups common when I am shooting well. Always shoots very good.

My 7-08 likes this RL15 load. Have never owned or loaded for a .308.

I'm surprised that some of you are not liking, or getting good results with Varget in a .308.
I have a GAP Rock in .308, with Varget @ 45.7 and 175SMK's lapua & Win Brass I'm getting great accuracy. With a 178 AMAX and LC70 brass @ 44gr it's a one hole shooter if I'm on my game.
with the 175-178 weight bullets and Varget 43.5-45.9 is the area to test for load development.
Check out snipershide in the reloading forum, and recipe sub-forum.

45 grains varget in a 7-08 with a 120NBT should make you happy. Close 280. I use 44.5 grains w/120 NBT.

VV N-540 is another very good choice in the same burn rate range for the 7-08 & .308.

Varget works in both for me and IMO is about the optimum powder for the 308 (130 - 168). I have better results with lighter (120gr) bullets when using Varget in the 7-08.
I enjoy handguns and I really like shotguns,...but I love rifles!

Getting excellent results in 308 win with 47-47.5 gr Varget and the same 150 gr Horn SP FB you are planning on using. I am using WW brass and BR-2 primers. This puts me in the mid to upper 2800s fps range with a 23" barrel.

I have loaded for four different 308's; three Rugers and a M70 EW. Varget worked well in all. I only load up to 168 gr. bullets in .308, getting a little over 2800 fps. from 150's and 2700 plus from 168's. I'm slightly under max but that's ok with me and groups are under an inch when I do my part. I only load for one 7mm-08, and as been stated previously, Varget does really well with 120's, not so well with 140's or above. I do highly recommend Varget for the 308. It is the same whether it is 15 degrees or 100
