I have my dad's .300 savage built 1946. There are (4) matching numbers on the gun. The butt plate underside, the stock where the butt attaches, the forearm wood and the bottom of the reciever. All numbers match.
I just bought a 1951 (guess based on stamp) and 600XXX serial number in savage 99EG 250-3000 with no holes and a stith scope and mounts. It does have swivel however and am still deciding if there ligit. The question is only three numbers match and they are the butt plate, stock and forearm wood. The reciever number is different. The other numbers are BX16??? I know that things changed after the war and 1950 the model years are ?? Can anyone talk to this point?? This gun is "REAL" nice and I am thinking about parting with the Stith gear and putting a rear sight back on it. HELP so I can sleep tonight knowing I didn't get had. Mike

Welcome to the forum!

Swivels aren't correct on any standard 99EG, sorry. And the codes are something they switched to in Chicopee Falls. Utica they always used SN's, then they went to codes. If they all match, tho, you're good.

I wouldn't stay up worrying about it. When they stopped serial number stamping those parts I think the matchup became less important. I have a 1957 F with the same situation and I bought it from the original owner who had never touched a screw on it.

Put an original rear sight on it if you want but keep the Stith setup. Someday you'll be old enough to need it. grin

If you take the buttstock off the code numbers are usually stamped on the side of the rear tang. Don

I almost mentioned this but then did not really want to recommend that some take a stock off... like some others, I attribute some of the tang cracks out there to overtightening stock bolts. Besides, it sounds right and they all match... no real reason to doubt it right is there?

Here's a picture of what the code will look like on his receiver, just so he's not so curious that he has to take his apart.

Kind of dark pic, sorry about that.

And foreward of that will be the LBC stamp.

There. Curiosity should be satisfied and everybody can put away their screwdrivers.
