Could someone advise the OCL of the 6mm-06 Imp with a 95 gr. bullet

It would be similarm but a bit shorter than a full length '06, depending upon bullet ogive and seating depth. If you are wanting to know if it will work in a short action, just chamber for the 6/284. Same powder capacity and ballistics, and 6.5 / 284 cases from Norma form quite easily to 6/284. I have used one of these for varmints and deer with good success.

I shoot the 6mm-06, by the way it will flat out run the 6mm-284. If you give me a little more information, I will see if any of my data will work for you. As to COL, I use a comparator, and then seat about .010 off the lands, if I can.

What action are you using? If you haven't built the rifle yet, I have a couple suggestions which may help.

The 6/284, the 6/06 and the 240 weatherby all have EXACTLY the same powder capacity. Some reloading manuals put all three on the same page with the same data to be used interchangably. Other than the normal variances from one rifle to another, there is no way that one can 'seriously outrun' any of the others! The laws of physics are what they are.

I don't know much about the laws of physics, and could care less about reloading manual comparisons. What I do know, which isn't much, is compared to 2, 6-284's and one 240 Weatherby, which friends of mine own and shoot, over reliable cronographs the 6mm-06 if faster. Now I do realize the 284 case is a good one strong and very trendy, but in our bunch of rifles the 06 case has produced higher velocities.

FYI, my 240 weatherby (win 70 with 24" shilen barrel) shoots 100 gr factory hornadys at 3250 pfs. a bit off the factory specs.

I have been running the 105 grain A-Max's out of my 6-06 @3391fps/es8.6 group size .680 @100yds.

I think the 240 Weatherby is a great cartridge, it is not my intention to demean it, or the 6-284. My comments were really based on a guy asking a question about the col of 6mm-06IMP, not another cartridge.

I guess my feeling is, if someone can't answer the posts question, maybey they shouldn't comment.

JerryEden, I have the 6mm imp as well as the weatherby. I chose the weatherby over the 6mm-06 simply so I could buy factory ammo. I like the weatherby but the brass is a bit finicky and expensive. I do not shoot it much, it is a deer rifle, so I do not go through a lot of expensive ammo. I have not had great luck handloading for it, the last loads I put together only ran 3100 fps (100 gr bullet). I shoot the factory 100 hornady sp with good results.

I view my 6mm-06 as a long range prairie dog or ground hog etc. shooter. It is just to darn heavy of a rifle to carry in the field to hunt deer with. I have it sighted in at a 400yd zero, so I only take the longer shots with it. In a stiff cross wind over in New Mexico a couple of months ago, I held one mil dot windage, and at 400yds was hitting 7 out of ten dogs. The load is 54/IMR4831/87 Hornady Hpbt, 3660fps. Really a nice load in my rifle.

Don, we haven't forgotten you here are a couple of col's I use in my rifle. I don't know if these will put the bullets to close to the lands in your rifle, but here they are anyway. I use a comperator to measure. 95 Balistic tip 3.855OAL, 87 Hornady HPBT 3.804OAL, Sierra 85 HPBT3.828OAL.

Thanks for your post, sorry for the delay; I have been out of town.
The rifle is built, but I would be interested in any suggustions for next time. I needed to get by for as little money as possible on this rifle (too many gun projects at one time) I used a Rem 700 30-06 with crapped out barrel and re-barreled with a Rem 700 243 new take-off barrel and reamed to 6mm - 06 AI. I haven't put it on paper yet, but have fire-formed 25-06. I would love to have any loads you have. I plan on shooting 87 gr hpbt for coyote and 95 gr for deer.

Give me a day or 2, and I will dig out my loading notes and targets. The load I posted in my previous reply, is my favorite 87 grain bullet load. We are in the beginning of the dove season here, (Arizona)so that is keeping me very busy now.

Safariman-I am a bit curious about your info on the trio of big 6's is this mainly from manuals and such, or have you worked with several of each?

I've worked with the big 6's for quite a lot of years and a pretty good handful of each. And to date I've yet to find either a 240 or a 6/284 that will stay with the 6/06. IMO they will be close (100-150ish) but like I've said
non to date have been faster.

Did you ever get my e-mail regarding the oal's I had posted?

Since I use a comperator, the oal's are always nearly an inch longer than if you just use a micrometer.

I saw your post above concerning the OCL but did not get a email. I did email you earlier asking about your OCL's in the post above. I didn't understand them because your OCL are lonfer than the combined case length and bullet length by about .75 inch! I am using 3.12 for fire forming and plan on using the Stonely Point gauge and try to determine the best OCL for my rifle once I start working up loads.

The difference in col you are finding with mine, are due to the tool I use to measure my overall lengths, which adds about an inch to the micrometer reading.Check out the comparator at midway, or some of the other supply houses.
