All-

I just found this board yesterday while looking for info on Savage 99's. My father in law passed away recently and had been telling me for years that he had some rifles he wanted to give me. My brother in law brought them over Monday. One is a 1969 Browning Safari grade .30-06 (not bad). The other two are 99's, one a 1928 model in .250-3000, the other a 1951 in .300 Savage. They both have years of use on them, and my question is, should I have them reblued, and redo the stocks? I can't take them outside with the bluing all worn off, so I don't want to hunt with them. Any words from the pros?

sure you can hunt them and wipe'em down when you get in... the real pro's can give you great info as far as collection/value etc. If you want to re-blue them you can but it 'may' take away from the value.

I and many others here have and do hunt with grey rifles. The bluing worn got that way typically from use...so use'em

Just my 2 cents

You Sure Can Hunt them, Just Keep the Metal Clean and Oiled. After all they have Character in them already

Rebluing will usually hurt the value, dependent on how bad the shape is now. If it's a total dog, then it won't hurt the value, but it won't increase the value as much as it will cost to blue it.

As folks have said, you can hunt with gray rifles. My main hunting 99EG is 80% gray and I have no problem hunting with it, and hunting quite well. Just wipe it down well anytime you bring it home (keep gun oil away from the stocks, will soak in and ruin them over the course of a few years).

Since they are family heirlooms you may want to reblue or somewhat restore them if they are in bad enough shape that you worry about anybody wanting to keep them in the future. Better to restore it and have the kids keep them than to leave them gray and have the kids leave them to rust or sell them off at their first chance. In this case putting more money into them than you'll ever get out isn't a big worry, you're not doing it as an investment but rather to keep enjoying the things that your father-in-law enjoyed.

Top gun is the Browning, next down is the 1928, bottom is the 1951. Let me know what you think.

Those do NOT need rebluing. While not immaculate, they are still in quite good shape. Don't touch 'em.

Middle one is a 99A, bottom is a 99EG.

Wow! I'm impressed. You nailed them just by looking at the picture.
The 99A- it has a different front sight than the original one (plastic bead). Is there somewhere I can buy an OEM replacement? I'd like to see it as close to original as I can.

why are you afraid to go out of the house w/ them? Oil 'em and hut 'em wipe down after. don't re-blue at all. linseed oil the stocks

No perfect OEM replacement, and you might run into troubles with sight height.

Best place to find an exact replacement is ebay where folks sell original parts, unfortunately.

As I learn more about 99's I'm reading a lot about barrel twist and bullet weights. I did the cleaning rod test to check twist in my new guns and it came out 1 in 10 on both. Is that possible with the older .300?
It has an "x" stamped on the lever boss,(ser# 306xxx) and the .250 has a "C stamped on it (ser# 674xxx) Any help would be appreciated.

Lucky:

Go to www.Savage99.com and click on dates of manf for year of manf. Site also has additional information on Savage guns that will come in handy. GW

Not sure on your 300 but your 250 is 1-14 twist and was built in 1951.
