It's a nostalgia/sentimental thing. No doubt there are better platforms out there.

I can't toss out my Auto-5 either....

Not unusual with some barrels. I would dump the Pro Shot and let her soak overnight in Wipe Out bore foam. Less work and less patches.

The bore's condition may not be the reason for the opened groups. It may be other things such as the scope, mounts, bedding, crown damage, or stock screw tension.

When I clean a barrel like that I hardly bother with the so called 'bore solvents' and use a compound. I have both Stoegers Barrel Restorer and their X Ring paste. Also JB's and others sell bore compounds.

There is no way I would spend a dime on that style (Rem) action. It lacks a good safety, extractor, solid bolt, ejector, trigger and style.

Shop for a better design if a bore compound does not work.

Steelhead what powder were you pushing the 200 with? In the whelen I get to 2850fps but Dad picked up a M7 in .358 and wants to push the same bullet.

I was at the camp with my dad this weekend and the discussion turned to deer rifles. I told him about this .243 and how the barrel is fouling so quickly. He thought about it for a moment, and then said "We should rebarrel that gun to something big. Like a .358 or maybe .338 Federal." No hard sell there...

Yep, Edge stock. The barrel has a Remington taper and measures .6 at the muzzle. I wanted something in between a MR contour and a sporter.

If you were to use a standard fill Mickey would you do anything different in regards to barrel contour?

Thanks again,

No trick to push the 200's at 2700 from the 358, if so inclined.

These would have to leave a mark.

I don't believe so.

I noticed the other day that our old Remington 660 .243Win camp rifle was not shooting too well. It's not one that we ever really ran lots of ammo through, but MOA wasn't too tough, especially with varmint bullets. The last trip to the range with a freshly scrubbed bore gave me several groups in the 1.5 to 2 MOA range, using two different bullets. I ran another cycle of ProShot through it this morning and blue goop was running out. Half a dozen patches at 5-10 minute intervals and it's still dirty. The .270 Sendero and Broughton .257Roberts each slicked out with 2-3 patches recently, even though they had seen more than a dozen rounds each.

What should I do with this 660? I killed my first deer with a dog-leg 600, so I'm thinking of a new take on old-school. I want to keep the barrel at 18-20", so I'm leaning toward .338Fed or .358Win. Perhaps a McWoody M7 pattern, #3-ish SS barrel, and black Cerakote? Also, I know that lots of folks use the reversed 700 ADL triggerguard with McMillans and 600/660 patterns, but I've got a nice alloy 600-style setup that I bought here on the classifieds. Anybody know if McMillan will inlet for factory-style 600 bottom metal?

Like I really need another project.... grin

The 358 Win is a good choice, especially if you want something that everyone else doesn't already have.
