Yesterday I got a Marlin 30AW out of layaway at my local pawnshop. It is in 30-30. Overall, it is in pretty good shape. According to the serial number, it was made in 1992. I did have one small thing that I need to attend to. The rear sight is missing the elevation "ramp" for adjustments. The rear sight itself is bent too much to try and fix it. I am thinking about just removing the rear sight since I am going to put a scope on the rifle.
I know the rear sight is on the rifle using a dovetail. My question is what direction (left or right) do I move the sight in order to remove it; or does it matter? I will probably use a rubber mallet with a small piece of wood to move the sight. Any ideas or thoughts will greatly be appreciated!

You can drive it out towards the loading port side, and re-install the altered forward portion in the opposite direction as a slot filler blank.
