It's such a huge area (BWCA in it's entirety) I don't know for certain that this was a blowdown area.

It's very close to an area that we have taken the kids to several times on different trips over the years. Some of the fire's path overlaps previous burn areas. But I don't think this was a blowdown area. If it runs north and east it could reach a big blowdown area.

huh, I figured it was the big burn people have been talking about for years in the making. 10k acres is a huge fire for MN, and big by western standards too. hope everyone in its path are same

Not a whole lot in the path right now except the isabella area that has some homes and businesses. if it keeps going that direction it could leave BWCA, jump hwy 1 and run south east.

Either way, it's just not good.

They say it is getting close to the blowdown and do not know what will happen if it gets there. They are closing most of the BWCA. 100,000 and growing that is just amazing. If it hits the blowdown it could run to the Gunflint.

The late news last night said it was nearing 111K acres and heading towards the blowdown area. She'll go like...well like wild fire if it hits that blow down. Mostly lodges in the Isabella area, and one of the only decent beer/burger joints I know of up there, Tressel Inn.

August 18th apprx. 1200 am lightning strike. They did a little backfire/control to keep it away from cabins and resorts by Ely.

I edited the posts I can edit. That is my fault. Eveything I found says lightening as well. My dad told me it was from a controled burn by the DNR. My mistake for putting it up without checking first.

Ahh, I suppose local news may have gotten it a bit twisted with the backfire efforts as TJAY posted.

Today was cool in the morning.Wednesday is my range day and I get up early to get there at first light.I tried something new today.I shot my 45/70 at 200 and 300 yards. It's dead in there at 100 yards and I was surprised at how well it did at the longer distances. The drop at 200 yards is about 20 inches and at 300 yards it is about 30 inches. It is a about a two second lag from fire until you see the dust at the 300 yard berm.Cool!!

The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70,it's almost a religion.

If you have to take a second shot then you probably shouldn't have taken the first shot.

STan,
Think about that. If it drops 20" from 100-200yds, it is going to drop a whole lot more than 30" from 100-300.

For my .45-70, from a 100 yds zero it drops 25" at 200 and 79" at 300. Takes 0.8 seconds to get to 300 yds with a moderate .45-70 load. Just seems a lot longer.

Dave,

We were just at the gun shop by home here and the dude that runs it has a camp NE of Grygla. I thought that was kinda cool. He said he was up for the early goose season and put 400 miles on the truck in a few days looking for deer and saw 3. eek

He wasn't real impressed with the deer situation.

Looks like the fire has missed deer camp. Looks like it stayed north and east. Unless they get a strong NE wind my area should be ok.

that will happen after several years of unlimited doe tags. frown
there is hope though, the remaining does will make babies, as long as the goddam wolves stay away from them

good to hear your stompin grounds are safe, fire is bad in the short term but long term can and will work wonders. it will probably push a lot of deer your way since they lost their regular ground to the fire, could make for a great season!

We are hopeful but the fire is 0% contained at this time. Looks like they will get a couple of day to work on it before the weather changes.

Hope all the big bucks move to our area and the wolves all go someplace else.
