I have a job to do next week as I am working now until Mon night. The neighbour captured a photo on his game caera of a big timber wolf in my back yard. I work hard to keep a fitting environment for deer, and have been successful so much so that this guy has come to visit.
I intend on baiting and staying on stand until he comes in. I hope he is a single or my hard work will turn into wolf scat. Anyone with ideas on how best to accomplish this, I will listen. I cannot snare as the neighbours dogs and mine would get in the mix.
I assume next week will be a hard one. I am looking for a goat or lamb to tie up as attractant.

I think you need a licence, Bro. Hate to see you get plunked for something that you can avoid. And if yer baiting the wolf, hard to say you weren't hunting him. Just a thought.

Wolves are legal in Alberta I believe....
Definately are legal in BC, and so is baiting them.
Howling has worked fairly well for me, as where I shoot long distance is pretty thick with them. Howling before and during shooting sessions while letting barrels cool has worked several times.
I wouldn't go with live bait though, this isn't a leopard or man-eating lion here. Its a wolf. Dead will work much better.
Why pack all that messy meat out of the bush when we can just go to the grocery store where meat is made? Hell,if they sold antlers I would save so much money I could afford to go Dolphin fishing. Maybe even a baby seal safari.

I'll check on the license thing on Monday when the MNR opens. Go figure the need?

I think you need a small game licence and a tag.

Randy Where are you in ON? My uncle had timber wolves killing sheep, calves, lamas, even 2 Pyrenees guard dogs. They thought it was a coyote pack, until they got a group together with several hounds and ran the bush, got 3 big wolves.

Depending on your WMU, you may need a tag. The link provides the info you'll need. You may only hunt wolves and coyotes under the authority of your small game licence accompanied by a wolf/coyote game seal purchased from ServiceOntario.
You can purchase a maximum of two wolf/coyote game seals per calendar year. The seals may be purchased separately or at the same time. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@fw/documents/document/239852.pdf

You are right I need to buy a tag. I will go into the village tomorrow and do so. There has only been the one on the game cam and he comes past about 4 am.
Do they come to bait? I know we used to use beaver carcasses to trap them but I do not have access. Well Tuesday evening I'll set out some chicken and see if that works. The neighbour lost a sheep the other night so we may have a party hunt going.

A road killed deer works well for bait if you can find one.

Go to your local pound and "adopt" the yappiest little dog you can find. Put the dog in a crate and place the dog/crate wherever Mr. Wolf likes to hunt. Watch the cage from a distance until the wolf appears. Kill the wolf. Return the dog to the pound.
The key to this is a dog that barks constantly and loudly. Wolves hate dogs.

Try the easy trick and use a predator call first. The wuff may not have ever heard a call and they are known to work.
