4wd, 5.3 engine, auto trans. I'm thinking it would be the engine or transmission. No problems yet, 82,000 miles, but I'm planning on keeping this a while. At today's prices would $4,000 be about the max cost for either at the dealer or a reputable shop? Thanks.

Think 4 would be at the upper end of things

2500-3000 more realistic

Shooter, wifes 2002 Yukon XL has 190,000 on it mow replaced trans at about 170,000 close to $3000.00 to replace from aftermarket with warranty, replaced both cat convertors at around 130,000 that was almost $1000.00 cats from GM local shop install, and last AC went before trans and that was almost $2000.00. You have some time before major repairs. The one other thing is the anti-lock brake pump will usually go bad in these year models this is located under the driver side of the vehicle disconnect fuse under hood and brakes will work just will not have antilock. Old school brakes. Looked on internet found a guy that will rebuid pump just have not sent it in. Hopee you get the miles out of the Tahoe like we have.

On my way to work this morning my 2003 Z71 p/u with 5.3L rolled over the 200,000 mile mark.

I've had 2 cat converters on one side, 1 on the other, <$200 each. I had a water-pump rebuild, along with some brake work and some other routine maintenance, don't remember the cost, but it wasn't much.

A contractor I use at work had a 1999 Z71 w/ 5.3L, he had the tranny rebuilt at 300,000 miles, I think he said $2200. Bro in law had same truck, same work, roughly same price on his when it had 180,000 miles.

Wife had a 2002 Tahoe, broken valve spring, dropped valve into piston, ended up with a new motor, but under extended warranty. Our cost was $138 for some belts and gaskets, not sure what out of pocket would have been. Hers is the first 5.3L I've heard that really had an issue.

FWIW, just checked ebay, theres an engine seller on there, with a 99-05 5.3L with supposedly under 80,000 miles on it, for $500 or make offer. Not sure what cost to have installed would be.

There is a small shop not far from my house and he has mechanics knowledgeable enough to know how to rebuild a GM tranny in house. He told me if the tranny in my truck goes expect around a 1600 dollar bill. The engine ..I guess I can get a Jasper replacement.
