IMO the .243 is fine for most deer hunting situations, however, i must confess that i prefer a larger caliber for the hedge factor , even though i have only shot one deer with a .243 and it dropped within 70 yds, so i cant consider my opinion valid compared to others..but since this is just my opinion (and i am feeling cantankerous) i would like to say to you boxer, to start your own thread about the merits of the 30-06, be its middle of the road, bandwagon performance, thats cheap to shoot and easy on the shoulder for those that have a tendancy to flinch under recoil...maybe someday you will try another 30 or so different chamberings and open up your eyes to the reality that your cartridge is nothing more (or less) of a deer cartridge then several dozen others ...stick to the op's query.

Boxer doesn't even like the .30-'06 nor prefer it to the 243. He just likes to argue.

Wow! 400lbs and in the head? That says rather alot about both cartridge and bullet. I bet it looks 400 pound in the pictures too? Would love to see something that magnificent. Thanks!

PM sent with contact info if you want to talk to the man himself. It was shot over a bait pile I believe in south Houghton county in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It's been a while, 20 ish years ago but I'm sure he will remember.

Looking at a Barnes #3 load manual a 90gr bullet running around 3200 fps carries over 2,000 ft lbs at the muzzle at over 1400 ft lbs at 200 yds. I would say effective enough for deer and wouldn't look much further for a good load than that.

I'm thinking of running my 243win as varmint/coyote rig as well as deer rig so thinking of using the 87gr v-max as the varmint load and the 85gr TSX as my big-game load. Thoughts or suggestion?

I do the same thing but use 85 gr. Sierra Varminter Spire points for practice/varmints. And i'm loving TSX's for deer. This will be my 2nd year using them, so hopefully I can put them to use again this year.

Cool! I did not think to look at Sierra. If they're cheaper than the v-max that's how'd roll.
