I seen two packs of 120gr 7mm Nosler Solid Base bullets in a store today and they looked like old boxes. I have never seen the Solid Base bullet before, can someone tell me about them. Why did they stop making them and how well do they work on deer? Thought about buying them and using them in my 7mm08

Solid base bullets were made before ballistic tips.Nosler brought back the solid base bullets for a brief time and I think they quit making them about five years or so.The originals came in red boxes of one hundred and the newer ones came in white boxes of fifty. They are good bullets and if the price is reasonable, snatch them up.

Seems to me that some of the 120/7's had a flat point on them didn't they?

My grandpa used to load the 165's in his -06 and killed 10 or so elk with 'em. I found a box of 180's not too long ago and have been shooting them in my 300 WSM, hopefully I can put them to work in a month or so. The 120's should be awesome in your 7-08.

The last mulie buck I killed was with a nosler solid base 165 gr. bullet in the trusty ol 06. It was a heart shot and it didn't pass all the way through. It was amazingly accurate in the rifle though and I'd use them again if I could find them. Until then, I'm using the good of hornady interlocks that are proven performers. If you can get those solid base bullets for a good deal, I'd grab them quick too. If I remember right there was 100 bullets in a box I had instead of the usual 50 you get nowdays....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Dober I believe those were intended for the 7-30 Waters. I shot a few in my 1st 708 thinking woods ranges and deer. They didn`t feed well in the M700 action though and I dropped them for the 139 Hornady SP

My 284 and 7x57 both shoot the 120SB well, but haven't killed anything with them yet. I have killed a cow elk at 300yds with 308 using 180 SB. I have killed a couple bulls with 270 and 150 SB. I am leaving for WY in a week and taking 27o with 130 SBs for mulie and lopes.
I used to work up hunting loads with the Solid Bases (optimal velocity and accuracy) and then drop the charge 0.5 grains for the Partition and it was usually right on for similar velocity and accuracy. Usually seated .030" off the lands.
My opinion would be that the 120SB would be a deer killer in your 7-08. When I run out of 150s I will use the 120s in my 7x57. I wish they still made the SB. I have a stash I use sparingly. jmho Tim

I got my first buck with a 130 gr .277 solid base out of a .270. The year was 1978.

Twas a great bullet. Wish they still made the 120gr 257, and the 120gr 6.5.

Solid Base was a good bullet and with them I killed my biggest elk and nicest whitetail. I still have some in 7mm and .30 cal. I used to buy 180 grain .30 caliber for $13.00 per hundred. Then Nosler started putting plastic tips on them and doubled the price so I went elsewhere and am satisfied.

I did the same thing and went to the hornady interlock as they still sell them by the box of 100 and they are reasonable and work great on deer and elk in a pinch. Although I really like the partition for things like elk and bigger.

I like the solid base bullets, I've got a few hundred left for my .243 that I ordered from the Nosler seconds shop. They are very accurate and work well on game.

I hoard many things. One of them is a good supply of Solid Base bullets in several weights and calibers. NSBs are probably my favorite C&C bullets.
I was hoarding when hoarding wasn't cool.

Agree. I liked them back in the 1980's prior to the introduction of the Ballistic Tip. A few years ago Nosler had a big close-out sale and I bought quite a few in 6mm & .30 cal. They've done real well both at the rifle range and in the field. My son took a mule deer and a good looking bear with the solid base bullets in recent years.

Both of my 308s like the 165 SB. I have only killed one deer with them, but it performed well. Behind the shoulder shot, good pass through, 25 yard run and fell over. I bought a bunch from Midway a few years ago when they were clearing them out.

I'm STILL using (since the mid 80's) the 150 SB's in my .300.
Accuracy with minimal meat damage on ground hogs to deer.

I used to use the Nosler Solid Base Boattails exclusively until Nosler stopped making them. They were a great bullet. I think the 120 in your 7-08 will shoot very well and work great for deer size game. Good Luck. David

Dober I picked up a box of those couple years ago at an auction. Wasn't sure how old they were. I was guessing Nosler made the 7mm flat point for the 7-30 Waters in tubular mag?
