Thanks again for all who offered advice for sighting-in a friends Rem 700 in .300 Win Mag but using see-through sights.

To begin with, I agree with everyone who wrote that see-throughs are junk. I wouldnt have any, and would never recommend them. However, my friend (the rifle owner) is stubborn, and no kind of explanation affects him.

Originally I asked for your help based on what I shot at 25yds. Now, I just took Jim to the range to shoot at 100yds. He got a nice tight group, but it was 4.5 low. Heres the problem. The scope is at its maximum adjustment for elevation.

Short of a miracle causing Jim to see the light, what is next? Should I do as Thumper358 suggested and shim the rear base .006?

Thanks again

I would think shimming the rear base would make it shoot lower.Try to talk him into quick release Rings.A 300 Win.mag with a see through mount is a disaster waiting to happen.I see him getting ringed in the near future.

Forget the shims. You have the perfect excuse to tell him they won't work and have him get a proper set of rings.

No let him lift his head up like a turkey shooting the stupid thing and take the scope in the eye a couple of times . This has been known to be educational .

Raising the rear of the scope drops the reticule, therefore does the same as raising the muzzle.

If you raise the front of the scope, the line of sight, the intended POA goes up so same as the muzzle going down.

The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.

Suppose when the crosshair is on the bullseye the bullet lands there when you shoot. Now elevate the rear of the scope. The scope is now pointing low. For the next shot, putting the crosshair on the bullseye requires you to elevate the muzzle. So the rifle now shoots higher.

Though painful, I think this is the best solution. grin

This may be a situation where stubborn Jim needs to reach his own solution.
