For you guys who get to hunt antelope, what would you say your average shot distance is?

Do you use stix, Bi-pod or sling?

Thanks,

JM

I have had the fortune to kill 3 of them
1st. Colorado 263
2nd. South Dakota 362
3rd. Wyoming 200

4th. Colorado in 2 weeks hopefully under 100 yards because its a muzzleloader hunt.

Avg about 275

Bipod ALWAYS

Hope this helps.

All mine have been no further than 200 yards.
I use a bipod. You can shoot them to over 800 yards + out here if you have a mind to, but no reason to when they just walk pretty close to you if you wait them out or stalk using hills to block their view of you.

250 yards is the average shot. The first few lopes were taken while in a sitting position/sling and prone with a back pack for a rest and recall once used my hat over some sage brush.

Discontinued those tactics a few years ago when I started shooting coyotes with sticks. They work on lopes too.

I use a Stoney Point Polecat.

I've shot more speed goats than I can keep track of. Most have been at less than 200 yards. None have been further away than 300 yards. I carry shooting sticks and ocasionally I actually use them, but more often than not I shoot from the prone position using my backpack for a rest. I like to wrap my sling around my arm.

I've gotten about 10 antelope, and the average distance is a roughly 160 yards.

A great part of the joy of the hunt for me is to stalk as close as I can. Dip down in crevasses and water run offs, use the small hills, and make a clean shot.

I'd rather shoot a 14 incher at 130 yards than a 16 incher at 300 yards. With today's bullets, powder, scopes and cartridges, a 300 yard shot is not that difficult.

But putting on a smart sneak, and getting one at 150 is really very gratifying, and a helluva lot of fun. And it last a lot longer.

Reminds me of what a friend of mine in the Navy said. Any guy can have sex quickly. But it takes some real talent to make it last longer.

Hope the analogy did not offend. But I'll not worry too much if it does.

I've killed about a dozen and only one was further away than 300 yards. I could have gotten closer on the one but I was working on using the plex in my scope as a range finder and I wanted to see how well it worked in real life. It worked.
I use a bipod.

My average is around 300 yards. In the past I haven't used a bipod, stix, etc, although I wouldn't be opposed to the idea.

I've shot about 15. My longest was 2 weeks ago-254 yards. I've got one at 165 and the rest are closer. I carry a Stoney Point Polecat but I mostly go prone with my daypack. My wife has shot a couple less. Her longest was about 130, and she mostly shoots them under 100. She mostly uses the Polecat. If you use terrain features or just go prone and break up your outline and wait them out, (or the truck and ATV hunters drive them your way) they can get pretty close to you. I shot one last year at 60 yards while proned out in a goofy position, holding the rifle sideways. I will confess that we mostly meat hunt, so we don't have the temptation to reach out and touch something very far away.

Less than 200 yards for sure

200 yards, now that we make more of a point of getting closer and own range finders. Bipods are very useful, but backpacks can easily be substituted

Last week:

150 yds
[Linked Image]

and maybe 35-40 yds
[Linked Image]

Both shot with the use of cross sticks like almost everything I kill.

If you throw out the flintlock doe, I probably average around 180-190 yds. Something on that order.

The last three antelope bucks I shot were out there a fair piece. Over the years though, I'd say the average shot was 250 yards or so.

A couple days from now and us Montana guys will be chasing them around....should be fun!

Three of my friends and I hunted North of Kaycee Wy. last weekend-the first buck was shot at 230 yds- 2nd at about 50 yds-third about 160 and the last at about 300.(first and third were ranged- second and last were estimates.) I've shot two others that were under 150. Regards, Bruce
