I had a really neat experience yesterday I have to share.

I met a young man a couple of months ago. He's an engineering contractor working on a project where I work.

He was born in Uganda in the post Idi Amin civil war during the 80s and his father was lucky enough to move to the UK where he was raised. He finished his education in Arizona where he now lives. Says he will never move back to England because the socialists have ruined it, and he loves the freedom of America too much. One of the most honest, hard-working people I have met in a long time.

He had never touched a gun in his life, until yesterday. He was raised to believe that guns are for guerrilla fighters or criminals only. So yesterday after work, we went to the gun range. He fired my .22 rifle at a paper plate at about 25 ft, and when that first shot made a little hole in the paper his eyes grew to the size of saucers. I knew I had him hooked. Here he is with my GP100 (please don't worry about his lack of hearing protection, that picture was staged after we finished shooting).

On the way home, he asked if I knew how he could join the "NFL"? I said, huh?, then figured out he was asking about the NRA! Today we went to lunch and I took him to my favorite gun shop, and he told the owner that he wanted to buy every gun he saw.

Moral of the story for me - this is the kind of guy we want to immigrate and live here in the US. He has a green card, but is waiting in line until he can apply for citizenship. We are constantly told we should have compassion for the people who sneak across our border and live here illegally. How about this guy?

Can't have any compassion for him.

He's working, paying taxes, following the law, waiting his turn, and he's going to end up being a gun-toting conservative.

Nope, his kind isn't wanted here...

This is exactly why immigration is a great thing. Doing the right way and thrilled to be here. How much better can it get. My hat is off to him. Please shake his hand for me tomorrow.

Excellent.

And surely there are many more decent, hardworking, skilled, law-abiding and freedom loving people like your friend yearning to become citizens.

Meanwhile, am bombarded by propaganda in my workplace as to why I should gladly be forfeiting my earned income to provide an illegal interloper named Miquel, his parents, his pregnant wife, and five kids free medical care and prescriptions, translators, and education, oh and a warm welcome. Meanwhile, I go without some things that they get for free - on my dime.

Great.
Just too bad he can't ever be president.
He sounds like a good person.
Sure he is not part "Canuck" smile

That is one happy looking man! Wish I still in Az. I'd like to shoot with him.
Tell him welcome to the U.S.A. from us.

+1 regarding getting him on the 'fire.

It's a shame our immigration system penalizes the kind of people we want/need (like this young man), and rewards those who play the system and don't have break our laws.

McInnis;
Thanks for sharing your story with us, it's nice to hear a positive experience with a new shooter.

A tip of the battered Bailey to you sir for making the effort to get a new shooter started on the right foot.

I've got some of that very thing planned in my future as well as our niece married a nice young electrical engineer from Columbia last summer. On his last visit here he was looking at the antlers up in the garage, the computer room here and in our girl's rooms and then expressed a very strong desire to go hunting with his short, bald uncle. grin

What can you do with enthusiasm like that?

Speaking of that, I think the smile on the new shooter's face about says it all. cool

Anyway McInnis, thanks again for the upbeat story and for your efforts to bring another shooter on board. All the best in your upcoming hunts as well.

Regards,
Dwayne

it is refreshing to find a young immigrant that wants to become an American, not just to reside here, and remain a Ugandan.

Thanks, McInnis, for sharing a great story.

"This Guy?", would be a welcome companion on the job, at the range, in my neighborhood, or at my dinner table.

Also, great job correcting a mind-set of negativity 'bout firearms.
