I heard that starting in '06 you will need one, just want to make sure you don't right now.

Muleshoe, As of last month, there was not a passport requirement but I would suggest you carry a copy of birth certificates for all members of your party, the confusion most often occurs when re-entering the USA....Firearms require a bit more effort. Those with DUI history can be denied entry. Good fishing!

VernAK has it right: a passport is not quite "required" but it sure makes it a lot easier to cross the border, and to get back. They have tightened up a lot even within the past six months. The border guards say that a that a driver's license will not do, though I've known of people to get across with nothing else (about four months ago) but they are constantly tightening the rules and the enforcment of them. Wouldn't count on it today, and if you got by it would be with a chewing for not having a birth certificate or passport. You need at least a birth certificate and ideally something else to go with it. A passport will soon be required (by next year?) and the border guards obviously prefer that you have one already. Unless you know you will have no further need of it for the next ten years, I'd get a passport.

At this time no passport is needed for U.S. citizen returning from Canada, Mexico and I think a couple of Carribean (sp?) countries. However, in 2008 all U.S. citizen will be required to have a passport to reenter the U.S. Immagrations laws are always in the news down here on the border.

A "certified" birth certificate, not a copy, is good insurance. In reality, anyone even remotely contemplating international travel should have a passport.
I suspect there will be a lot of people in line to get one when the new requirements begin. It will be a requirement for re-entry from Canada, Mexico, and the Carribean.

I used my birth certificate to go to the states once back in about '94. Since then I have used only a passport. It's a lot easier and faster.
