I have a Remington VLS in .22-250 that I bought last year for my dedicated coyote gun. I sighted it dead on at 200yds last year and when I finally got a chance to shoot a coyote at about 300 yards or so, missed him.

How would you recomend sighting in a .22-250 to be as versitile as possible for the various ranges that I tend to be presented with?

What kind of load were you using? The common factory loaded 55 grain stuff usually only drops about 5" at 300 yards with a 200 yard zero, so you should have hit your coyote with a POA 2/3 up the body. I zero my 22-250s 3" high a 100 yards and figure that the bullet won't be over 4" high or 4" low out to 350+/-.

I've been a far gone yote chaser for a long long time. For a long time I sighted 3" high, missed a lot of yotes due to shooting over them.

An old timer I knew told me to stop being so stupid and sight it 1" high and be done with it. It worked and I started to just knock the dogz silly.

For what it is worth I would sight it 1" high and that is it. It will work very well for you.

I use target knobs. "0" is on at 200 yards and the next white line I drew is "0" at 400.

I sent in the leupold off my 22-250 and had a turrent put on the elevation adjustment. zero at 200 and use the clicks to get out farther. It works for me.

Marks on the right track. I've shot a 22/250 for coyote calling for many,many years.
With a 55gr. load at 3500-3600fps. a 1 1/2in. high setting at 100yds. will give you about a 240yd. zero., and about a 7in. drop at 300yds. That alot of calling country.
Lately, with a good range finder I've kept a drop table on masking tape on the side of my stock. Since I've been doing more howling for dogs many will show themselves at the far edge of a wheat field and stand for the range finder. Then if I guess the wind right I connect on some pretty long shots.

It depends on yor load. I mostly shoot 52g Speer and Hornady Match BTHP's at a relatively sedate 3579fps. I zero for Maximum Point Blank Range for a 6" diameter target, meaning the bullet is never more than 3" above or below line of sight. In practical terms, that means 2.3" high at 100 yards, 3.0" high at 150 yards, 2.7" high at 200 yards, 0.0 inches high at 277 yards, and 3.0" low at 323 yards.

Actually on my designated yote rifle (6/06) I use a Leuppy with Premier reticle dots out to 700. I sight it 1.5" high at 100 and then I have dots at 300 and to 700 with 100 yd increments. Fartherst we've take a dog with this set up is 634 yds. He hung up and wouldn't come in, so we set up and just tipped him over. Kind of neat to see a sage old dog do a Olga Corbit at 634 yds!!!grins

Am thinking of sending my old 7.5 Leo in for target clicks. That is still one of my all time fav scopes!

rangefinder is a must, you can save alot of time by having a cronagraph and a computer bullet drop program. If you have all this gear mentioned, a target dont stand much of a chance...........

Bullets of 53-55 grain @ 2800 fps sighted in about 2.5" high at 100 yds should be around zero a 300 yds and somewhere between 7 - 8" low at 400 yds.

Thats what my Sako Varmint is doing.
