As you all know I have a 300 win mag, I use 180gr Ballistic Tips at 3180 FPS out of a 27" barrel, 5 1/2 contour, Schneider S/S.

My question is:
If I switch to Match Kings what can I expect in flatness and accuracy increase over what I am now getting?

I have to stay at 180gr of under as my barrel will not stabilize a heavier bullet.

What gr bullet would you recommend?

I would like to go beyond the 650 yard self imposed limit I currently have with this rifle.

What is the max effective distance of this rifle for use of killing elk (using match king bullets)?

As a side note: Do any of you use moly coated bullets? Why?

Thanks,
Here are some #'s.......Your load....Temp 40,Humidity 40%,Bar Pressure 30,Altitude 1800 feet...With a 100 yard zero.....500 yard's,Drop 39.6,velocity 2241,energy 2007.....700 yard's, drop 97.8,vel,1919,e,1427.....1000 yard's......drop 261,vel 1496,e,894......180 MK everything the same,500 yard;s,D,39.2,V,2270,E,2059.....700,D, 96.2,V,1965,E 1529.......1000 YARD'S,D,254,V,1540,E,948......There is'nt much differance between the two ballistic's wise. But will the BT be as accurate as the MK at those range's?Probably not.....If you don't wanna shoot a heavier bullet and the BT are accurate to the ranges you wanna shoot,I say stick with them.I was just wondering what the twist of your barrel is?....The Max effective range of the 300 Win Mag is as far as you can consistently put all your shot's in the kill zone of the animal you are after.....

Don you might be able to get away with the 200 gr MK...That is probably as heavy as I would go anyway with the WIN Mag and your barrel length........I think the B.C of the 200 is around .600 if I remember right.....And you should be able to get around 2900 with a 27" barrel.I your gun would shoot them, they would be a Big improvement over the BT.....Just a thought.....Boyd...

DN,

With the 12 twist. I am not sure if you can stabilize the 200 gr SMK. I would still try it to see though. I think you will achieve better accuracy from the 180 gr SMK though, for this reason. If you still can't get good groups move down to the 175 SMK I know your 12 twist will stabilize that one. I shoot that from my 12 twist 308. You will most likely get enough speed from that bullet to safely reach 1K with enough energy to kill quickly.

I think Boyd has the RCBS load program as do I where either one of us can run ballistics that include altitude, temp, bar. pres, himidity etc. Let me know if ya want some run.

Thank you for the reply, I just always like to get all the newest loading manuals and ballistic programs to keep current. I figure it never hurts to have lots of info for comparisons.
