What would cause the rifle to fire when the safety is moved to fire position?

It would be my guess it has been improperly adjusted. Follow these instructions and it should fix you up.

All that I have seen have been caused by someone trying to adjust the trigger that didn't understand sear engagement or from a very dirty trigger. Remove the barreled action from the stock and flush the trigger with a good solvent. If that doesn't correct the trigger, take it to a gunsmith or adjust it yourself if you feel qualified.Rick.

Shawn,
Thanks for the link. I have an old Remington factory manual that states that field guns should not be less than 3 lbs.
Mine was 1.5 lbs give or take. It was also very dirty so it got a good cleaning and I readjusted it to 3.25 lbs. My kid uses it sometimes so I guess its better to be safe than really sorry.
I was hunting all last weekend in a very dusty windy place called South Dakota. It only malfunctioned after firing several hundred rounds. But it is the worst possible thing to have the gun fire when you don't want it to. Thanks for the help.

The best way to fix it would be to trade it for a rifle with a decent trigger design like a M-70....... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />.......DJ

M-70 is great trigger,but it comes with such an ugly heavy gun. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

How old is the rifle? It's a known issue with the older (pre-82?)rifles whose bolt would lock down when the safety was engaged. If yours is in that category visit the Rem website as there is a standing recall.
Cheers...
