I have decided to take my CMP SA Service Grade Special deer hunting. I have put an Ultimak scout mount and 2x7 Burris EER scope on it. 200 yd hits off the bench are easy.

My question is about my hunting projectiles, I have 3 to use at the house.

150 gr Nosler Ballistic tip

150 gr Nosler Accubonds

150 gr Nosler Partition

168 gr Nosler Ballistic tip

Velocity measured by chronograph is 2800 fps for the 150 gr bullets and 168 gr is 2700 fps.

Will the ballistic tips perform better at these velocities or will the premium Accubonds and Partitions be better for shooting 110 # live weight deer here in Texas?

I am leaning towards the 168 gr BT @ 2700 FPS.

So any thoughts on these bullets will be greatly appreciated.

I am sure any one of those 4 bullets would work fine on your deer. Pick the one that shoots the best.

At this point I'd be more concerned about powder selection than bullet choice.

150 Partition.

+1 on that powder selection point. Any of those bullets would be OK on deer. I'd go with the most accurate bullet. My Garand only gets fed with IMR-4064 or 4895 when it comes to powder. Just last week I made up one of my 150 gr. bullet loads that used 4064 and just for grins I substituted 150 gr. Hornady Interlocks for the usual 150 gr. FMJ. Already had a couple 5 round clips sitting here doing nothing; might as well utilize 'em. Haven't had it over to the range yet but if it's accurate I sure would be tempted to haul out the Garand this year when I'm gonna be in a rifle zone.

I used to use the 150 Silvertip and 47.5 gr. H4895 in my Garand, but the deer weren't cooperative when I had her out there.

Welcome to the Campfire!

I'd go with the 150 Ballistic Tip. IMR4895 was designed for the Garand 152-grain service load. The charge of H4895 old70 suggests should work very well, or a grain or two more.

Welcome to the 'fire.

With Sierra 150 grainers (#2130) I've found that 49.0 grains of H4895 produces 2801 fps in my Springfield 03-A3 which is what was specified for M2 Ball per Hatcher. WLR primers and Federal cases though others shouldn't matter enough to make a meaningful difference. That and IMR4895 are the right powders, let velocity be your guide.

My current M1 garand loads consist of 48 grains of H4895 and CCI 34 primers using either Federal or Winchester brass. My current bullets are 150 grain Hornady SST or 150 grain Speer Soft points.I hope to use either one of these for Deer or Hogs.

Thanks for the replies. I have a good load that I use.

It is 48.5 grs 4064 with either 150 gr or 168 gr bullets. Chrono was 2800 fps with the 150's and 2700 fps with the 168 bullets.

Accuracy will tell me which one to use, I lean to the 168 ballistic tip because it seems the velocity envelope should be perfect, but the 200 yd target should tell which the rifle likes.

I got the 150 gr Accubonds when Nosler had them on special for 110 dollars per 500, I bought 1000 and got free shipping.

The rest came from the Nosler seconds store.

I have read internet tales of the Ballistic tips exploding but at 2700 to 2800 fps these bullets should be good. I killed a lot of deer with the old lead tip solid base bullets.

Thanks again for the replies,
