My vote would be for a Remington 7600. I have the 760 in 30-06 and love it.

A 7600 will be a good replacement to your semi. It will fit pretty much the same, safety will be the same and be more accurate/dependable.

I have a 7600 and 3/760s. They aren't fancy, just work well.

I'm puzzled, shaman ... mighty puzzled....

You maybe already know what to do, but haven't taken the steps to invite the knowledge arriving.... (rest helps)

Both the semi-auto and the pump will do the new, stalwart duty you wish and await, but only if unencumbered by the negative spirits of the recently retired entity. Hang the troublesome but worthy item on the wall, but deeply bury it's failings. Light a sprig of Sage and invite the new...

-Good gawd-you had one Remington automatic and you'd WILLINGLY consider buying another? You must be a glutton for punishment! This shouldn't come as any revelation to you, considering you've been putting up with a Remington automatic for so long- but THEY STILL DON'T WORK! They're heavy, they still jam with alarming frequency, and they're about as accurate as a smoothbored shotgun shooting slugs. Having been a rangemaster for many years, I wish I had a buck for every Remmy autoloader I saw jam, or shoot inconsistently. Go for the BLR. It's heavy, but an excellent, accurate rifle. Too many people carry autos because they can't make the first shot count. You should be more concerned about hitting with the first shot, than you are about how fast you can unload the clip. Okay auto-lovers-take your best shot!

742's must not all be the same, mine was ammo picky but with what it liked it worked just fine and shot well also.

Ah, good thinking, but I think my tactics were more prosaic. I took the offending Remington 742 and placed it in a positon of obvious disgrace next to my gunsmithing table. All the other rifles have an easy view of it whenever I open the safe. The message is clear: "This will happen to you if you fail."

It must be working. Mooseboy had the M1 Garand out this weekend, taking his last practice prior to the start of KY Yute Season. Here were the results:

[Linked Image]

That was his first offhand target at 50 yards. I think Mooseboy was made for a 10.5 lb battle rifle, and vice-versa. This was using the standard 165 grain/ H4895 load for the Garand, substituing Hornady Interlock SP for the FMJ.

I also cleaned up the Garand considerably. Since the last time Moose' saw his new interim deer rifle, I added an oiled leather sling and went at the stock with 0000 steel wool, wood cleaner, and paste wax. The stock went from murky and black to a rich brown with honey highlights. I also bought him a few 5-round clips.

I hope all the deer rifles get the hint and are on their best behavior in the coming months.

It looks like Mooseboy and that Garand were made for each other. As for the 742-you put it in the best spot! LMAO. Good reply, Shaman.

Hard to give advise about a rifle/load when I dont know the terrain you hunt in.
Down in Florida, and South Georgia, I like the Marlin lever gun in .44 mag. For hunting in heavy cover, with ranges under 75 yards, its hard to beat this combo.
The last 7 deer I have killed were with this rifle, using a hanloaded 270 grain Speer GDSP over a heavy load of H110.
I have used a 742 carbine here also, with good results. Like yours it was in 30-06.

It's official. KYHillChick has decided to buy me a Saint Hubert's Day present. It's a . . .drum roll . . . May I have the envelope please . . . .

It's a slightly used Remington 7600 in 35 Whelen with scope, pad, brass, dies, and bullets that VANIMROD and I helped her find in the Free Classifieds section.

What is Saint Hubert's Day?
Christmas Comes Too Late

See Savage_284 was complaining about there not being a good day to trade gifts if you were a hunter. I suggested Saint Hubert's Day.

I guess it caught on in our household in a big way.

Thank you KYHillChick-- you're still the best girlfriend I ever had.

What a gal! I predict you will be as happy with your new 7600/Whelen as you are with her.

WhelenNut:

So okay, the 35 Whelen is on the way. I know that if the 30-06 is too much gun for a lousy whitetail, a 35 Whelen must be intense overkill. What makes a good Whitetail load? I'm thinking something like a 200 grain Hornady SP or RN behind a moderate load of H4895.

This will probably be a rifle I use off of treestands, so reaching out and touching something clear across the pasture won't be an issue. Besides, I have a nice 30-06 bolt gun for the beanfields if it comes to that. I'm thinking of loading this as a 35 Remington on steroids, a bambi blaster for the cedar woods with a normal operating range of about 100 yards.

The 200gr Hornady will do just fine for your purposes. The RN might open a bit much/fast at Whelen speeds but the SP seems to work well. Moderate speed is best.

Don't be afraid to try the Sierra 225gr. It's a good deer bullet too and very accurate.

H4895 will work well, as will IMR4064 and R-15.

When you get your load worked up, try it at 200yds...just for grins. I think you will be surprised.

Yes, 200 yards is quite workable. I was running some theortical loads through Pointblank. With the right load, you can put a 250 grain round into a target at 300 yards with a ton of force. Zowie! Of the ones you suggested, which bullet/powder combination has the least recoil? Since I'm only trying to do in a deer, I don't have to put too much of a hurt on my shoulder. Beside, Mooseboy may want to try it.

I'd better stop thinking about this-- I'll start doing my happy dance again.

WHAT a woman!! You just may not deserve such treatment(big grin).....seriously congrats, I've been "wanting one" for awhile now, who knows I may get one, it's REALLY hard to "justify" another gun when you own a great shooting /06!

NOT that there is a real need.......you know what I mean??

My 200gr Hornady accuracy load is 57.5 gr of IMR4064. That's a grain under max in the Hornady manual for about 2550 out of a 22" bbl. which is plenty fast for this bullet. 2"groups at 200yds are the norm with this rifle/2-7X Leupold...your mileage may vary. Going down to 54 grains still gives you 2400 with very good accuracy and all you need for Whitetail.

Recoil is about like an '06 with 180's. The rifle has a Pachmayer Decellerator pad on it.

When you go to the 250's (either Hornady RN or Speer PSP) recoil gets a bit more noticable but certainly manageable.

When you fire a M7600--regardless of caliber, don't be concerned if the action opens a little. It is designed to do that to unlock the action and ease extraction. With 250's in the Whelen the action will open about half way...again this is normal operating procedure. My 270 does the same thing with 150's.

Another thing. M7600's are known to dimple the primer. Again this is normal so don't be concerned.

Be careful if you let Mooseboy shoot that thing. You might not get it back.

Kentucky had their Youth Season over the weekend. Mooseboy had the M1 Garand out, trying to give it a taste of first blood. This is the results. Sometimes you can be on target without firing a shot.

Very good story and hunt, tell him I'm proud of his decision as well! Not always easy to do on a two day hunt, but he'll know as he gets older what a grand thing he chose to do!

We got a goose egg as well, seen a total of 7 deer and not one of them gave him a decent shot! HE chose to not take a THS(at age11 no less!) of which I'm very proud !!! He said he liked deer meat and that shot would mess too much up!

He had an awesome time, got to see more deer than he's ever seen while hunting(he's finally able to sit still much better.....before this year he was just too excited about it all!......not a bad thing.....but hard to see deer like that)

Plus he got to hunt Sun afternoon with his mom which is another good thing from this hunt for all of us!

Is he goiing to get to hunt next weekend(early ML)??? Hope he does, sounds like he'd have a blast even if he doesn't get to (blast)

Ain't it funny? The further we go into this, not-killing gets to be more fun than killin'.

It's like I said to Mooseboy a few years ago when he shot a doe from the same blind, and managed to hit a wooden rail instead. It was that free youth bonus weekend at New Years. The freezer was full, and I really didn't need any more venison. I told him it was the best possible outcome. He'd had the doe dead to rights, he'd managed to count coup on her. What we saved was all the hassle of dragging her out and carving her up.
