What is the best way to increase mag. length in a 300 Win from the standard 3.340? The distance to lands in my 70 is 3.570 and would like to have it shoot those small groups and still function as a repeater. Would it work to take out the block in the back of the magazine, and would a different follower then be required? Thanks Cowman

<br> You can replace the magazine, follower and spring with a 375 length. You will also need to replace or shorten the bolt stop. Fairly simple job. Parts are available from Brownells. Call if you need some help.

Charlie obviously knows what he's saying, but you can get by with just removing the spacer in the back of the mag-box and shortening the bolt stop. I've seen M70's done this way and the original follower works fine even with the extra end-play.I tried the follower from my brother's M70 7 Mag(3.4") in my M70 300 Wtby(3.6") and it fed fine.Try it before you spend the bucks on new parts.

Sometimes you have to mill the ejection port rearward. (This requires drilling and tapping also, as you remove the front screw hole when milling. I go to 8-40 for all the base screw holes.) This depends on the cartridge, the heavies such as 458 Lott need the big port, otherwise loaded rounds will lay on the follower when ejected, or eject "lazy". It's a good idea anyway with all conversions of the magazine box, ejector, and bolt stop. Action shown was a 300 Win Mag, now is a 458 Lott.
